XBOX 720* announcement, looks like. Can't say I'm anything but apathetic about it. I don't really have the desire nor the funds to upgrade my systems every time they come out with a new one (I bought a PS2 after the PS3 was already out, though I did upgrade to the 3 when a game I really wanted released, lol).

* = or whatever they're gonna call the next system

The Xbox 360 was released almost a decade ago. That's not long enough to warrant upgrading your system? ::)

I'm just sayin I see no reason to upgrade just for the sake of upgrading. If a game comes out on the new system that I really want, then I'll consider upping. :P

Plus I'm pretty much exclusively a PC or PS gamer now. ;)

Does it play Pokemon yet? Ok, then it's not good.

It does. Hence the whole 'generation' bit.

Hoping for their sake they scratch the plan to make used games unplayable.

You'd think they'd learn from the PS3

No not that, likely neither of consoles will be able to play old games since they are both different architectures from the previous gen (though the next xbox is roomed to have a $150 add on that is basically a 360 in a box that makes it possible).

I mean that as of a month ago the new xbox would not be able to play a game even from that generation that was previously owned without buying a one time use code a-la how the EA sports games do online passes now. Except instead of paying $10 to be able to play games online again you'd have to pay a fee to play any game you buy used

I think that the best way to reward costumer loyalty is to have your systems say backwards compatible.  Any system that doesn't do that is making a mistake in my book.

I also think it's a bad idea for any game system to add a layer of complexity beyond just popping in the game and being able to play it.  That was the whole idea that separated game systems from computers to begin with ("Plug and Play").  If they start forcing you to enter a special code (and eliminating the secondary market), I think they will just be asking for trouble.  Either people will find ways to hack around it, or they'll just choose to go with a competitor's system that doesn't require such hoop-jumping.

For what it's worth they're making the architecture switch (which will make backwards compatibility near impossible again) because they've pretty much reached the limits of what that tech could do. The playstation 3 ran on an ARM architecture, the same thing that runs modern smartphones. As much as people like to say the ipad is a capable gaming device, it's not compared to real consoles and the architecture is very limited. Xbox 360 ran on PowerPC which has the same problem. They're both switching back to a PC architecture.

I'm really more of a Nintendo guy than an Xbox guy, so take this view as the view of an outsider looking in. This was my reaction after the reveal of Xbox One:
