The story took a big step back from black/white, the graphics took a big step forward (but that's to be expected when a game moves on to the next platform).  The post-game content was lacking, but that's generally the case with the first installment in a generation for pokemon games, where the sequel/third game gets more to do after the game ends.  Most of the pokemon from this generation were designed pretty well imo, but this generation was pretty small, and more pokemon from previous generations are found in the game than from the new one. It's good enough to keep me interested, but its not the best game they have produced.

Maybe the gen 3 remakes will be good, though I have my doubts as I never like gen 3 anyway.

Alright, so, I will preface this by saying that I have only played Red/Blue, Gold, and Fire Red.  I played Red/Blue immediately after they came out (strategy guide and all), filled the Pokedex, and loved it.  I then enjoyed Gold...and the next generation after that just turned me off to the series.  Fire Red was a great way to enjoy the original game that I loved with better controls/graphics, and I didn't really explore the 'additional' content.  It just didn't interest me.

However, I gave X/Y a chance...and I have to say that I'm overall disappointed.  The graphics, gameplay, use of the touch screen (moving my pokemon around in box/party by stylus is AWESOME), all fantastic.  However, I'm very sad that they decided to go with such a sub-par story, though, with villains that were over the top and a plot that was very railroaded without a particular reason, and where explanations were sparse for what was going on or why I should go to the next city.

I'd give it a 6/10 myself.  I'm told I should try Black/White and BW2 for story, but I think that X/Y may have gone and ruined the newer generations for me, sadly.

Being evil doesn't make them good bad guys (also diamond/pearl's bad guy wanted to destroy the entire universe and remake it in his image, I don't think team Flare is quite that bad), a good motive and actions that make sense make good bad guys.  The story of X/Y is definitely weak.

Spoilers ahoy.  Ye have been warned, ye scurvy dogs.

Spoiler (hover to show)

how did the game ruin the new gens for you it only gets better blue red are not even that good there is not many pokemon no story period the only reason its worth being played is for nostalgia.

See, here's the thing:  I wasn't promised a story in Red/Blue.  If you go back to the games I had as a kid, they had no story.  Mario?  Well, see, there's this random plumber dude (since it was just easier to make him that way for the graphics and movement), and he jumps on turtles and mushrooms, goes in a submarine and single-engine aircraft for some reason, throws fire from his hands, and the princess is in another castle.  That's all it was, they were very simple, and that's all we expected.

So, Red/Blue promised me this: You will try to become the most powerful trainer there is and catch all the pokemon.  And you know what it gave me?
1. A rival who was actually pretty cool and had good dialogue, (sadly absent in X/Y, where I disliked all the friends, feared the next conversation with them, and begged for it to go faster every time), constantly in my path, sometimes fighting me.
2. An evil group trying to do dastardly things that gave me a test of my power, and satisfaction when I overcame them.
3. A bunch of elite masters of the different types to test me.
4. A group, aptly named Elite 4, to try to stop me from achieving my goal. (And then that rival guy again!  DUN DUN DUUUUN!)
5. The ability to catch all the pokemon by having one friend with the other game (or a brother I could steal the game from).  I didn't have to breed, find specific items (beyond elemental stones I could buy), evolve pokemon on a Tuesday when the moon is full while having a Dark type in my party and an empty pokeball in my bag, etc.  They were just...there.  Huzzah!  I can catch them all!  Even these legendary ones (which gave a sense of accomplishment as well).

So, it gave me everything it said it would.  The newer games try to pretend they have a great story, and X/Y REALLY pushed it.  Every city I went to, I got to hear about dancing and how I should look for Mega Evolution for some reason, with long dialogue that wasn't particularly engrossing.  If you want to push a story on me, at least make it interesting.

Going along the other parts of your question, with Gold, I started noticing things getting added that I didn't like.  Not all of the original 150 pokemon were great designs, but the new ones (especially after G2) were awful, and turned me off to wanting to collect them.  And that was even if I could.  Now I had to breed, trade with a bunch of people, get lucky, and spend an inordinate amount of time trying to fill my pokedex.  That has only got worse with each generation, apparently, especially when the only way to get old pokemon is to trade them up, if you even filled the previous game which was similarly hard (oh, but there is a tool they made for this!  Oh it is something I have to pay yearly for...).

I guess a lot of it is nostalgia, true.  I did first play the game when I was 9, there is that.  However, I can tell you that I kept all my old games (including collecting extra copies here and there), and I feel I get at least the same satisfaction in replaying Red/Blue as going through X/Y.  Sure, the functions and capabilities of the new game is impressive, and fun to play with.  The game just seems mostly empty to me is all.

We'll see.  I'll have to ask my secretary, but I'll pencil it into my schedule in the meantime.  Though my secretary has all the pencils, so that will have to wait too.  And I'll have to get a secretary.  Should probably start there.  I'll get my secretary working on it.

Since we are talking about old Pokemon games did anyone like the Pokemon CCG video game?  I really like the normal pokemon games in general because it is fun to level guys up but then it get really old and redundant because it doesn't have that much strategy. Yeah you have to plan your team right for the Elite 4 but its not that hard to train and switch out the things you need it just takes time. Cool games I just got bored with them. Its really like the CCG one because its like a pokemon version of rts and I like deck building so its really fun. Kind of a cheap way to learn a new trading card game to if you don't want get too far into it.

I gotta say I'm mixed on the villans in x/y. The team itself was stupid and annoying but I really liked the villain, who was a villain. He tried to play it off with justification but so did other people who wanted similar ideas. I do miss giovani's attitude of "Why am I evil? *punt pokemon* because I can be" but all the games so far have had a villain like that
Spoiler (hover to show)
. The story was a bit basic but mechanically many things were improved. Now if we can get a mechanics jump (the first real big one since probably gold) like this again and a black/white level story that would be awesome. I enjoyed the entire thing, loved the new pokemon, even if just for a laugh (Klefki's pokedex entry...Klefki needs to be able to learn roar).  Honestly it was a 8/10 for me but numbers are SUPER subjective. So i'll just say having such a mix of pokemon from all generations NATIVELY in one game was amazing.

As to thehobbit pokemon post end game is where the biggest strategy is. I love the CCG, the program has been majorly upgraded and works really well.

I actually got back into handheld gaming because my friends were gushing over X/Y. I'm a first (R/B/Y) and second (G/S - didn't play Crystal) generation player, so this has been a huge improvement. I agree that the story is kinda "meh" (and what was with the HUGE distance between the first and second gyms? Goodness me), but I am really, really enjoying the game play improvements. I don't play Pokemon for the story, though, I play it because I am someone that loves to collect things and achieve things, so Pokemon is perfect for my personality type. :)

Frankly, I prefer the revamped Diamond and Pearl story in Platinum to any other story, at least Cyrus feels like a true evil mastermind.

On the topic of X/Y now that Bank has been released, does anyone have a legitimate Keldeo, Meloetta, Victini and/or Genesect they'd be willing to trade?

Do you want a shiny klefki for it? It has max IVs in HP, Special Defense and Speed.  I have several functionally perfect klefkis if you want one of those (max HP, Defense, Special Defense and Speed).

Do you want the Victini back? I gave both klefki.  If you want, I'll give you a couple more shinies if you're fine with me keeping the victini.
