Hard to believe it's been 5 years, and its time for an upgrade already...but when the computer keeps randomly shutting down, you know things aren't looking good...You can only replace video drivers so many times...
Current Specs:
Gigabyte GA-7VT600 1394
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 256MB Video Card
AMD Athlon XP 2700+
1.5 GB RAM -Corsair I think
Realtek Onboard Sound
250 GB IDE HD- Main
120 GB IDE HD- Backup
120 GB SATA HD- Extra
19" Samsung LCD
3 70 mm fans- about 3inch wide, might be 90mm
400 W Power Supply
What is an adequate upgrade that will last me another 5+ years?

WHAT?!?!!? No Photon Torpedos or Modulating Phasers? How do you expect to survive in the Gamma Quadrant, verbal judo and diplomacy?
Godspeed,
Mike
btw, I'm starting to have that random freeze thing happen with my 5 yrs old. Might be time for me to upgrade also. Nah, I'll just keep using the anti-static spray and keep Ol' Bessie rumbling along.

My compy is 7 years old and you have to peddle to get it power.
Can't wait to build my own sometime soon... or get a laptop.

have you tried reinstalling Windows? I do this every year, and it makes your computer just like new.
I'm entering and I'll send you my config soon.

That's your number one problem. How you ran this comp on these specs with that power supply is a mystery.

Upgraded to a 650W Antec, which was nice for it...still getting restart issues. Reformatted computer, computer restarts during downloading of directx 9.0c, downloaded fine second time. Anytime I try to install any games, computer restarts...Anytime I get to server selection or character creation on Warhammer, game crashes, and no messages come up...
running Burn in 2008 at highest setting caused computer to restart, testing above normal settings, also caused computer to restart...
So maybe the mobo or the proc is bad???

I see an issue. Your using ATI.
Nvidia is the way it's meant to be played. Also, there's an Intel Inside.

Also, one note from a fellow 2.4ghtz Quad Core user...
some games, while they SHOULD see all four, only recognize two cores. The ONE game I needed to see all four (rhymes with crisis) doesnt see all four, and is the ONLY game to give my system a challenge. This is with 4gb ram, twin 8800GT 512MB's in SLi, 1TB hard Drive...
