I bought one, owned it for 2 hours, didn't like it, tried to return it to best buy, but they wouldn't take it back, so i tried to sell it at a video game rental shop, who only offered $10 for 2 mats, which was a huge rip off, so i gave it away to someone that later told me it sucked.... :)

moral of the story-
bundle up and run :)

depends on what kind of mats you had. if they were the ones that come bundled with the game, those go through my store for very cheap. if you actually bought yourself higher-end mats online (such as redoctane dance pads (little known fact: redoctane first got into the business years ago by selling very high quality metal dance pads for DDR; they moved on and they're now the owners of that multi-million dollar franchise what you know today as guitar hero), then yes, that would have been a rip-off.

guilty little known secret of mine: i actually personally own every american release of DDR for every system. i was a huge fanatic when it first came stateside when i was in college (2000), and ever since then i've collected every version for every system.

guardian, im unsure of what you're asking for really. there have been only 3 releases so far on the xbox 360, so theres not much to pick from. if you're looking for a ddr game strictly in terms of a workout mode, then theres no harm in picking up the most recent installment, which would be DDR Universe 3. it does feature a workout mode that keeps track of calories lost during songs as well as charting your progress. im sure there are many more bells and whistles than that, but its been so long since i've played it...

if you're looking in terms of quality of interface/design/songs, i have always liked the playstation versions of DDR exponentially better than the xbox ones. its mainly due to the fact that the playstation games are developed by konami of america, which works very closely with konami of japan and is able to attain better konami original (ko's) song licenses and stick more to the original DDR formula and arcade releases. every version on both xbox's has been developed by konami of hawaii, and while still overall good and sticking to the basic ddr formula, they kind of do their own thing and feature more american mainstream songs. this might be right up your alley though, as should be expected with an american fanbase, but for me i prefer iterations that are as close to the arcade/japan releases as possible. bemani (the name of konami's inhouse music studio/artists) music is sooooooooooooo good.

both xbox and ps3 should be getting a brand new iteration of DDR here this holiday season (that is being developed by konami of america, which makes me very very happy), but they have both been in and out of my preorder system that its impossible to give you a solid release date. right now the ps3 DDR is scheduled to come out on november 16th, but for some reason the 360 game isnt even in my system. there seems no likely reason the xbox version would not release on the same day, though.

if you want a ddr universe 3 bundle, just let me know.

It's actually not very good for a person to run outdoors when the air temp is below 0...plus there's no way I could motivate myself to do that.

That was basically it--I wasn't sure if there were more than those 3 or if there were better alternatives to DDR available.

For music, I think Techno is the best music for DDR so as long as the one I get has plenty of that, I'd be happy.

What are the advantages to higher-end mats?

Is there any chance that Dance Praise mats would work with a 360?

Can you let me know if/when a solid date shows up for the next DDR? I found Universe 3 for $30 on ebay and that was pretty much the amount I wanted to spend, but if the next one is considerably better, I'm willing to go a bit higher.

Early mornings in the middle of MN winters rarely get to the double-digits, particularly with the wind chill factor.

DDR Supernova was my favorite.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

LOL. D.C. got 3 inches of snow and all the schools were closed.
Minnesota got 5 inches and didn't think about it.
When it is 10 degrees and 15 MPH winds, you usually stay inside.

i feel you there, and its for this reason i like konami originals so much; they're usually techno/dance/trance and feature great konami artists like dj taka, system s.f., naoki, ryu*, etc. the playstation is the best for these types of songs since they feature such a sheer number of them from the arcade versions, but the universe series still has a decent amount of them. ddr universe 3 really stands out too since it has a good number of dm ashura songs, who is a great artist that remixes alot of the konami originals and they all have that techno/trance vibe to them. im probably a bit biased though, since i actually used to personally know the guy from the bemanistyle.com and ocremix.org boards years, years, years ago before he was hired by konami.

What are the advantages to higher-end mats?

well, the regular bundled mats are pretty cheap: plastic and they move around alot. its pretty much impossible to do higher difficulty songs on a regular mat because they slip so much. higher-end mats...they're usually metal, carry enough weight to not slip, and mimic arcade pads pretty closely. but they usually cost an arm and a leg, and im not sure anyone really makes them anymore.

Is there any chance that Dance Praise mats would work with a 360?

you know, thats a very good question. dance praise mats use usb connections, but im still not entirely sure if it would be compatible with 360's.

sure thing, DDR for ps3/360 has been on my radar for quite some time. we might really be out of luck though. even konami's website only shows 2 new DDR's coming out, and they're both for the wii and ps3. :(

DDR Supernova was my favorite.

i have to agree with you there, both supernovas had an INSANE amount of konami originals in it.

Thank you for the input...it looks like Universe 3 will be my best choice as I don't have a PS3, only a 360.

Perhaps I can find a way to make the mats slip resistant...the floor I will be using is tile, so duct tape might be the answer (as it so often is  :D )

yup, thats how i used to do it old-skool back in college, mod the standard dance mats. though i just got a heavy enough piece of plywood/board and stapled the mat down to the board.

~Bump~

I decided to hold off until closer to Christmas to see if I could get a really good deal, has there been any changes or new stuff announced for DDR recently? Again, I only have a 360. I'm about to go see what deals Best Buy and Gamestop have, but figured I would also double check here again.

Thanks MKC and anyone else for your input!

you're in luck. :)

http://konami.com/article/KONAMI_ANNOUNCES_RETURN_OF_DANCEDANCEREVOLUTION_TO_XBOX_360%E2%84%A2/151

additionally, 'dancemasters' is konami's iteration of DDR for the kinect, which is out now (actually its more like paraparaparadise, if you're familiar with other japanese konami games...).

Being that I want to get it sooner, I went ahead and got Universe 3 w/ pad off E-bay for $30. Depending on how much I enjoy that, I will definitely look at the new one when it comes out.

Thanks for the heads up!

Look into Stepmania - you have a computer, I assume, and you can play any song there. You can even download any DDR song, and there are packs with all the DDR songs. If your mat has a USB connection, you can plug it in directly; if not, you can buy a PlayStation to USB adapter for cheap.

I love my RedOctane mats, by the way.
