Getting back into Type 2 after 5 Years - Catch Me Up!

I need some help with Type II...

1) What are people playing these days?
I'm sure a lot has changed... in my day, some of the top decks were Elders of J./Gray False Peace, Blue-Purple (Claudia/ET)/Crimson (Leviathan, RDragon, Zimri), Blue-Silver banding/Pale Green (Absalom's Soldiers/2KH)

2) Have there been any significant Type II centered rulings?
'Last major ruling I remember was that all fortresses were considered unique, anything new since?

Thanks, looking forward to getting back into the swing!
-Joey

I'll let a real T2 player give you more details, but here's a couple things I've observed.

#1 - the PG defense you referred to has been replaced by Assyrian Archer/Rabshekah/2KH/Forgotten History.  The Assyrians can be protected in territory with their fort.  The archer can kill a hero in territory.  2KH is CBN on Rab.  Forgotten History ends the battle, and saves the Archer's life.

#2 - T2 is all about not letting your opponent play the game.  This is done either through initiative tricks like I just described, or by combo decks.

#3 - Combo decks have really taken over at the top.  They either draw their whole deck in a turn and then stack it so you never see a LS, or they discard your whole deck in one turn, or they discard your hand and put 3 "Sin in the Camp" cards down so that you never have another card to play with for the rest of the game.  Some of these combos have recently been destroyed with rulings.  But I'm sure people will come up with more.

#4 - If you are returning to the game after a long hiatus, I would recommend starting back with T1 before jumping into T2.

Prophets are powerful with Search (FooF) x5 and Hidden Treasures x3.  Many of the newer prophets are very useful in the Foof/RoA tins.

Defenses Vary but Crimson/Gold/Pale Green and Black Philistines are very powerful.  They all have fortresses, they all have Horses and they all have CNB battle winners (some have to be played on certain people to be CBN.

False Peace Decks good but seem to have fallen out of play in some areas although they do go nicely with the side battle cards in Prophets.

Type 2 Site Lockouts are a growing trend, especially with High places and other cards that manipulate sites/LS's

Highway recursion has been nerfed.  :-\

What happened to "highway recursion"? I always used to play the ole' book of hozea, book of jashar, long day, stillness (then Jubilee for the repeat) combo in type II, did this ruling affect that combo?

Not really that particular combo. Basically, there was a combo where you could have two heroes in battle, play a bunch of enhancements, withdraw one hero and all the enhancements with Highway/Stillness/Trust, etc, then band another hero in, play the enhancements, and repeat. Highway was given an errata to withdraw enhancements only if no heroes remained in battle.

The Long Day still works for multiple battles. It's just harder to force your opponent to repeatedly block with an immune character, since a specific character can only enter battle once per turn (so you can't use the classic Claudia + ET + Obedience of Noah to repeatedly choose Red Dragon/Emperor Claudius).

Actually...it doesn't sound like much has changed. :D Eders and blue/silver aren't as popular as before, crimson is mostly Babs now, and Assyrian Archer is used now instead of Absalom's Soldiers, but other than that most of the things you mentioned are still pretty popular. There are also a few more options available now, like Philistines, Romans, and Demons.

Finally played some Type II after a long intermission...

My friend Ray and I played last night and it was really fun. I used an Elders-Silver (2 TSA, 3 Captains, 4 Gatherings) with a brown defense (5 Foul Spirits, 5 Gib Tricks, Zeds, DOMs, Uzzah, etc.).

I missed rescuer's choice a lot, it's a freeing feeling to have 7 souls on the table, and then block with Zed, play land purchase, and Hormah the only soul they can rescue that turn.

Any advice on new cards I need to worry about stomping my elders? I know my two old enemies were HHI and Simon the Magician, anything new to watch out for?

If used defensively, Grapes of Wrath can destroy your giant Elder band.

Genesis sees a lot of play, prophet seems a good bit, silver is more splashed than an entire deck, teal is highly used, gold is also highly used but more of a splash due to Meeting the Messiah and Water Jar, red is still not seen much, purple is used with Throne of David/ignores, or with ET/AoCp and TGT, white is everywhere due to TGT. I think that's about it for offense. Defensive wise, black is running rampant. Philistines with site lockout or a splash of A-bomb. Babylonians are also highly played, then Assyrians which is what Prof described, Romans-all Emperors with d2 play the next Heavy taxes with Syrians splashed in, demons-Gates of Hell and demon recursion auto block abuse, gold- weak!, brown is somewhat used, but I see it more splashed than an entire single color defense.

elders still gets steam rolled by  Palegreen and Gold.  Grey and black can cause some trouble.  Also an orange brown defense  could cause lots of trouble becuase of the time it takes to set up gathering.

Basicaly a smart player will snipe your key charecters then stop the battle before you can do anything about  it.

Also that chain still is hurt by caputer which has gotten better,  Artifacts like HOH GCalf COF ect.....  if you don't stack up on a bunch of blessings your in big trouble.   Even if you have them its almost impossiable now to get iniative to play them.   As almost every birgade has a way to protect ls from being rescued if you give them inaitive.

Eeek, hadn't thought about Grapes of Wrath vs. Elders :'(

So if I stuck with the Elders, I might do well to pair them with a sniping brigade to kill off CBN characters like Rabby, Nergle and Naaman... as well as "autoblockers" like Uzzah, Trembling Demon, etc.

The problem with Elders is that they don't share deck space well... I guess I could go to the darkside and add TGT characters into the deck. They could take advantage of the Blessings, but I have a feeling I would soon not be using the elders at all :/

Any creative Elder/_____ combos that could help me deal with CBN ECs/EEs and Autoblockers? Judges' Seat? Purple w/ ET+kill cards? Others?

Gold offense with Meeting the Messiah and Samaritan Water Jar would be a good splash. Meeting the Messiah can get rid of annoying evil characters before attacking and three SWJ's can set aside up to 27 of your opponent's cards.

Not much need for elders if you go over to the dark side.

TGT makes MMoJ's band CBN, so you have a 28/24 (better than 8 elders) band with just the ladies.  Couple that with a few Blessings and a He Is Risen w/ TSA for extra BtN crunchiness.

Of course, John gets you past the auto-blockers and Peter helps against Simon Magus.

You don't need I am Grace for any of the horsies.  Salome takes care of that quite nicely.

Of course Susanna is very very good, but Lydia might be even better.  Especially if you build off of John and add in some interesting purple.

Yeah I've had a type 1 TGT/Assyrian deck since Ohio natz, no real interest in taking it to type 2.

I wish I could make my elders work..., maybe paired with green speed I could get them back out after a Grapes attack quicker (Hur/Gifts)... unfortunately the OTHER new dominant has something to say about that too... :/

Hey I really appreciate the advice you all have been giving me, it helps a lot more than you know. As of today I am giving up the Elders offense  :'(

I'll have a new deck up for critique within a few hours, thanks again for the help! See you on the new post after a while...
