Title: Saul/Paul
Post by: LukeChips on December 19, 2014, 05:08:30 PM
The topic came up in a thread, and it looked really cool. Especially with all the new convert cards in TEC like Love and Blinding Light. So I decided that I wanted to make a T1 Saul/Paul deck. Does anyone have any suggestions on what cards are must-haves for this deck? It is probably going to be a Clay/Roman deck. It will look something like this:

DOMS:

SoG
AotL
NJ
Blinding Light
CM
Mayhem
Shipwreck

Artifacts:

Lampstand
Chariots of Fire

Forts:
Herod's Temple

Offence:

The clay heroes and enhancements that convert

Defense:

Roman hand control, similar to the 2013 T1 2p winner.

So, what do you guys think?

This should go without saying, but since you don't have all cards listed, I'll still say it:  You need Herod's Temple for this deck.  Both sides are NT, and it makes the additional Sauls useful for even more.

Not as big on Chariot, which may seem odd to people (I am a big advocate for it), since Clay just has so much healing and recursion available, as well as territory protection to avoid mass wipes.

Also, be sure to include Love :)  It lets you heal a Saul into a Paul (more Paul needed of course) and protect things outside of battle.  Ananias of Damascus is also of course needing to be added.

Otherwise, if you are REALLY making this a Paul deck, you use the best battle-winners in any brigade you want, as they are CBN.  You don't necessarily need a huge offense otherwise, or to focus in Clay, if you are able to consistently get out a Paul.  Granted, I've never played one of these decks, but the barebones should be out there in decklists on this board :)

Thanks, I added Herod's Temple to my Deck list even though I don't own a Herod's Temple. :(

Other things to add:

Damascus--gets Saul out of your deck faster or gets him back from the discard pile if your opponent manages to discard him.

Paul's Disciples--helps keep Paul safe.

Peter--back-up for Paul's Disciples.

4 Drachma Coin--Speeds up the deck since you have Peter.

Caesarea Philippi--must use Site for any NT defense.

Fortress of Antonia--great Site to use with Romans.

Holy Grail--since Ananias is a one-time use, you need a way to convert Saul again if he gets reset.

As for the rest of the offense, I might consider splashing a little Green in there. Simeon is an awesome Hero who can band to Paul or Peter. Barnabas helps get Lost Souls out for you to rescue.

Aw man! I just traded that card (Holy Grail) thinking that I would never use it :( Now I'll have to trade to get it back!

Another option is to use I am Patience -- that has unlimited uses.

Would I am Patience still wok on Saul? It would convert him into a GREEN hero.

No matter the type of convert, the identifier on Saul says that he becomes Paul.

See #24-25 for more Paul info. (http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/redemption-official-rules/rulings-board-posting-rules-references-new-rules-and-faq/msg521978/#msg521978)

And while it may seem tempting at first, DON'T use Chorazin.

If Saul/Paul starts running rampant, and especially if there are lots of convert decks out there, I know what I'm adding to troll decks (http://redemption.wikia.com/wiki/Altar_of_Dagon_(Pa)) ;)

Honestly, I think the case can be made that any deck that uses a standard size defense and includes Uzzah should find a spot for Altar of Dagon.

That and The god of This World...

I've already determined that TgoTW will be going in every deck I make that includes human EC and doesn't convert on offense.  It is just too good just from the reduced drawing (especially because it hits their Mayhem too for card advantage), and the protection is fantastic.

Tying that in to the topic at hand...I hadn't realized just how good of a Paul counter he is.  He has an artifact-level effect that stops Paul decks from getting their engine fueled, even though it is squishier on an EC.

On Uzzah, I agree, though I have seen less use of him myself.

I was thinking of putting TgotW in my deck, but that would wreak it!
