questioni about samaritans

I am teaching a friend how to play and i am considering a samaritan offense becuase i believe they are great in this format. So my question is what defense complimants them the best? I think a defense that snipes out fortresses that protect from conversion would be best. I know romans are out of the picture.

Greeks- Abom is always fun
Assyrians- One of the stronger defenses and have ASA to kill off protect forts
Phillistines- Recursion, Goliath and Land Dispute to kill protect forts

Yea i love abom but i thought that it would be a little too extreme for a beginner to learn. I really was considering philistines but im going to use a philly defense in my type 2 build so i need all of my philly stuff and he wants to play test stuff then decide if he wants to persue the game of redemption after the next tournament so i have to let him borrow stuff. Iam not very familiar with assyrians. I have the new cards but i play type 2 now and dont have all copies so i havent ran them. How are they running now?

Assyrian/Magicians are probably the most popular defense in t2 right now. In type 1 you would use Archer, ASA, Survivor, Egyptian Magicians, Manasseh, Balaam, Damsel, 2k horses, DoU, Wonders Forgotten, Invoking Terror, Confusion, Divination, Charms etc.

Oh okay thanks bro i really appreciate it. Last question: what is there strengths and weaknesses? Based on the line up you gave me i can see that the strength would be in banding. I always liked a magician defense because they are an overall good defense like my favorite defense which is egyptians.

The only real weakness is that the defense doesn't draw as much as some, but still isn't too slow. The strength is that it is very versatile. ASA can knock out arts/forts/sites, Survivor has great initiative and is protected from AotL, you have several banding options, Charms to capture their heroes, 2k Horses to draw/play next, Confusion to pick off SoG and several great battle winners.
