Title: Noob Here
Post by: melike1hit on July 04, 2011, 11:12:28 PM
Ok so I am getting into playing this game and I think I am going to Maryland Match next Sat so I need to build myself a deck.

Questions:

1. How many Dominants-Sites-Artifacts-Heroes-Enhancements-Villains-Curses- should I have in a 50-56 Deck?
2. Does should I have only Heroes/Villains/Enhancments/Curses with affects?

Doms: All the staples, if you have them.  These are Son of God, New Jerusalem, Angel of the Lord, Grapes of Wrath, Harvest Time (good), and Christian Martyr, Burial, Falling Away, Destruction of Nehustan(sp?) and Mayhem. (evil)
Sites: Depends.  If the Di sites work with your deck, include them.  DragonRaid if you're worried about site lockout.
Artifacts: Some good arts to have are Unholy Writ, Holy Grail, Chariot of Fire and Magic Charms (With magicians)
Heroes: from 3-10, depending on theme.  Aim for 7-9.
Enhancements: Try to have more characters than enhancements.  This way you have less of a chance of not drawing a character.
Villians (AKA Evil Characters): see above.  Though try to have a bit more offense than defense.
Curses: Depends.  If you've got the slot for Confusion of Mind/Rain Becomes Dust, sure.  Other than that, depends on theme.
2.) Yes.  If all the cards you play have Special Abilities, then you'll do better.

Feel free to post your deck on the Type 1 Deck Advice board.  Once we know specifics, then we can help more.

It all depends on the deck.  Disciples concentrate on heroes, while Judges is more enhancements.  I can't help you much more without knowing at least what brigades are in your deck.

ok thanks for your help

major white themes include:
TGT(NT White(Often paired with NT Gold)) (btw is this still playable, guys?)
Musicians(OT White i think, (I've never played them so i dont know the specifics))
Daniel Mini-theme(Also OT White(VERY weak and is basically limited to anti-Bab/crimson cards, anything else destroys this theme)

And remember these strategies can be paired with other colors such as green and the aforementioned gold for Maximum strength but since ur new i would advise staying with 1 color offense and defense until your comfortable with the theme/color ur using and then expand later

I had a TGT/Musicians deck at Creation and placed 2nd for the big tournament at the end so they are definitely still playable. I also built that deck the morning of the tournament so if you put the time and effort in it could be really difficult to stop.

Guardian
is not a staple and is not really used much or so ive assumed from hearing statements like
"half the time they get their Falling Away before even get to my guardian"

Warrior. That is wrong and is most often stated by the weaker/newer players with few pro/good players agreeing

Actually I agree with Warrior that GoYS is NOT a staple card.  And I think that the breakdown between people who think it is totally awesome vs. people who think it is a deck spot that could be used better is NOT between weak noobs and pros.  Rather I think it is between people who are speed players and people who are more defense minded.

If you play a speed deck, then GoYS is probably a good card for you to include.  It has a higher chance of coming up before your opponent's Falling Away.  It locks in the LSs that you save because you've got to get to 5 before your opponent.  And it is a less important good dominant that you can throw away to get rid of Confusion of Mind (because most speed decks depend heavily on hero SAs, and need to attack every turn).

If you are a defensive player, then GoYS is probably a bad card for you to include.  It has a higher chance of coming out after your opponent's Falling Away.  If your defense has been able to withstand the onslaught of a speed deck, then their probably out of options, and you can just walk in to take LSs at your own pace later in the game.

So it's between those that intend to win tournaments vs those that don't.

ProfU is one of the top 3 defensive players of all time. He has won his share of tournaments. Gabe is a perfect example of the offensive minded player.(I added this bit on Gabe to give a balenced view of the two extremes.)

I see what you did there :)

I appreciate the compliment, but my wins are nothing compared to Gabe's amazing number of National Championships.  I'm really a 2nd tier guy :)

You haven't been to a nationals since 08.  That's three years.  You've improved since I beat you in Feburary of 09. (Yes I still remember a game that took place two years ago.) Sauce' post has inspired me to study the the three playstyles in depth. Expect a essay like post in two or three weeks.

FACT: GoYS has been in 6 of the 7 recorded T1-2P 1st place decks at Nationals since 2003.

If you think it's not a staple you're either Tim Mierzejewski or somewhere below 1st place. ;)

In the defense of defense, Hero won half of MN State's T1-2p with a 70 card deck. His only loss was a timeout after he had the game won, which only happens to defense decks. That's why they're bad.

Wow. I had to read that like 3 times to make sure it was coherent.

I've heard Andrew, Wester, Westy, Ring Wraith, Wraith, and more recently Couz, but I had yet to hear/see him called Hero until now.
