My 2008 Tournament Deck: Musicians and Sadducees

Since I had to miss Regionals yesterday and since I won't be attending Nationals, I might as well publish the deck I was working on through this tournament season.  Comments are appreciated but I'm not really going to make any changes now that I'm done for this season, and next season I might be working with new cards mixed in and/or using a new deck for tournaments (Tom knows my current favorite).

Total Cards: 56

Lost Souls: 8
Hopper
Female-Only
NT-Only
Lost Soulseses
Swapper
Anti-Burial
Site Doubler
Cannot-be-Prevented

Artifacts/Curses: 6
Chariot of Fire
Crown of Thorns
Priestly Crown
Thirty Pieces of Silver
Unholy Writ
Confusion of Mind

Fortresses: 4
High Priest's Palace
Musicians' Chambers
Raider's Camp
Wall of Protection

Sites: 2
Herod's Temple
Hormah

Dominants: 7
AotL
SoG
NJ
Burial
CM
DoN
FA

Heroes: 8
Asaph
Chenaniah
Ethan
Jeiel
Heman
Angel in the Path (Wa)
Captain of the Host (ideally Wa)
David (Red, Wa)

Good Enhancements: 7
Cymbals of the Levites
Praises
Sing with Stringed Instruments
David's Music
Protection of Angels
Sing and Praise
The Stars

Evil Characters: 7
Alexander
Captain of the Temple Guard
High Priest Caiphas
Sadducees x2
High Priest Annas (gray)
Lying Spirit

Evil Enhancements: 7
Doctrine Like Leaven
False Witnesses
Just a Hireling
Net
Pride of Simon
Momentum Change
Twice Afflicted

This deck is all about recursion and stalling.  Chariot will get Heroes back, Ethan will get good Enhancements back, Doctrine Like Leaven will get Evil Characters back, and Pride/MoChange/Afflicted can allow Just a Hireling to be played up to four times in one game, to keep Lost Souls out of reach for a good long time.  Also, Hormah can place souls on the bottom in addition to the Hireling play, and the two captures are to have Raider's Camp as a backup if you're not getting the Hireling combo rolling early enough.

All the good Enhancements can go in Musicians' Chamber and be used on all the white Heroes and David.  David can also use David's Music, Sing and Praise and The Stars outside of Chambers.  The cards allow for many different banding combos, not the least of which is that e.g. David can use The Stars to band to Captain and Angel, who then can band to a white Hero, and two of those have extra banding.  So the potential for a big FBNB play, plus if Asaph is banded in you can still use your musical Enhancements.

Crown of Thorns combos with HPP to make 1/0 Sads that will have great initiative and can combat a Zebulun ignore.  Writ and 30 Pieces can go into HPP to free up the Art Pile.  Confusion of Mind can help against FBN Heroes and/or nasty offenses like Genesis.  Wall protects your mad banding from being exploited by your opponent.

It's not fireproof but it's held up well against pretty much every deck I've played against it.

Angel in the Path is my best bet, but the nice thing about DoNning my Crown is that Chariot is now reasonably safe, as well as my two HPP Arts, so recurring Angel will not be too bad.

But the nice part is that even if that doesn't hack it, I've got three good brigades and two other Site colors, so I've got a 67.5% chance of having access with regular colors.  Dragon Raid was recommended when Gabe gave his notes on how to improve the deck (the addition of David, for example), but there were other cards I just wanted too badly to let go.

Have you played a dedicated site deck with this? I.E. 5 Babylons and a Baby Banquet hall. (Plus a nasty crimson/brown defence)

Not this specific version of the deck, but one of our playgroup plays with a Babylonian Sitelock defense, so in general, yes, I test this against that exact strategy.

GOOD JOB!, thank you for posting your deck i was always wondering how you used musicians. now is ther a way to makeit deffence heavy and still make it play as good?. and if not would you mind if i wher to copy it?

In my mind, this is defense heavy.

15 cards minus doms equals defense heavy? Have you met RR? ;) 33 cards is defense heavy, 50 some cards is defense heavy (or type 2 ;) )

It's about quality, not quantity.  If I can stall out the opponent for the duration of the game, and still have 5 or more ECs in my territory, I'd say I'm probably about even with a guy playing with 12 ECs who loses half of them in attrition.

Any evil cards aside from dominants, Uzzah, and Sabbath Breaker is defense heavy to me :(.

I agree with the site access part. I'd take out 30 Pieces of Silver for Dragon Raid, but then again I've never been a fan of 30 Pieces.

well thats just a good deffence not a deffence heavy deck.
I'd rather have a small and working defense over a large one that struggles.

Well, I'm not particularly interested in having an argument over how to define a deck as defense-heavy.  What I can tell you is that this one has its risks and its flaws but generally is designed to be effective over a long period of time.

Have you tried this concept in type 2? I ask because it seems that while you could use JaH 4 times, without Doc like Leaven to bring back the sads you may have issues having enough sads to kill.

Can't do it.  Hireling is dual-colored, so only one per deck.  It would enjoy more recursion in T2, but at the same time, relying on it as the backbone of the defense would make the T2 version more vulnerable.

Yeah, thats what I figured too, I built an RTS version early tournament season false peace chain + just a hireling. It works ok but not spectacular.

I'm currently trying a deck very similar to this and have found angel of god to be useful. He's a great alternative to captin when they have up anti fbtn stuff

Can I ask your reasoning to using FA and not GoyS?
Fortress Alstad
Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?

FA obviously slows down the opponent, which is all I really need.

GoYS is a coin flip for effectiveness, and I can use that slot for another offensive card that will win be a battle and be recurred.  I'm less worried about having to rescue one more time if I'm approaching the end of the game with most of my cards still intact.

I see, I tend to use GoYS over FA because if I run into a monster defense, I want to make sure every rescues counts. Plus, if they do play FA on me, I can ditch GoYS to take out a Confusion of Mind. It's harder to use Falling Away in a way other than its intended purpose. All a matter of playing style I guess.
