Chris and I were discussing a Gardenciples deck I was goofing around with, and we came down to two card slots. Which would you prefer?
Mary Magdalene and Words of Encouragement
-or-
Simon the Zealot and Mustering for War?
-
Words turns your non-interrupt battle winners into interrupt battle winners, so I'm always partial to it. :2cents:
-
For the record, the debate was between Simon the Zealot and Mary.
-
I can't see Mustering for War being good. I've preferred Mary Mags over Simon the Zealot in the past.
-
I'd have to go with Mary Mags. CBN band can be a killer and if your bartband dies early you can still use them.
-
I'd use STZ words AND mfw...
-
I'm kind of confused why Mary Mag would not already be in there. If you are running a Gardendisciples deck, I would expect you to have all 4 of TGT ladies in there.
-
Randall kind of skewed what the debate was. My Gardensciples deck is currently at 52 cards, and I was lamenting having to cut Words of Encouragement (due to never using it because my other two white enhancements [aside from Consider the Lilies and First Fruits] are interrupts) to bring it down to 51 (with Plot). I'd also been trying to work in a way to get Simon the Zealot and Mustering for War into the deck, but couldn't find two more cards to cut, at which point, Randall suggested Mary, and I disagreed. Hence, this thread.

The reason for skewage is that I was trying to disguise what deck you were using and the specifics of said deck. I can confirm that the above is true. I don't really see how adding yet another 7/6 to the band helps more than hand/deck protection (especially with Confusion etc going around).
-
The main reason is that right now, pale green isn't that popular a defense. In a deck like this, about 90% of the time I'm going to have a better option than Simon the Zealot to make an RA with, be the TGT ladies, Phil + Bart, Susie, or even John. Hand/deck protection is nice, but most of the time, I'll never get a chance to use it.

The thing is Mary Mag is not just another 7/6 hero to band in. In addition to banding she can utilize TGT, gives you another character for Susanna and He Is Risen and really hurts demons.

That's why I said to take her out. Where will you see a demon defense in T1? Simon can be used for Fishing Boat.

Well, I mean, there's always King of Tyrus, who is splashed into a lot of decks. Being able to take him head to head isn't something to scoff at. Not to mention demon defenses do pop up from time to time, and can counter TGT well if not prepared for at least a little bit.
-
You've already got four ways around KoT: TGT (if he's splashed) Phil/Bart, Thomas, and the TGT band.
-
I said head on. I mean, in the early game, where KoT can potentially be an auto-block for a couple turns, having one more card to stop him is great. I'm just not sure why you're so intent that an ability that will hardly ever get used is better than a band that potentially needs Writ, Charms, and CM to stop.

Simon also has the stray danger of letting Pharisees dismember you.

What do you mean?
-
When 4DC or Simon's protection is active, Entrapping Pharisee is an autoblock with no recourse. Granted, Phil/Bart and Thad don't mind, but he could come in on Simon himself or snag an unwarry John or Matthew.
-
Ah, I see. I guess it would work for the same reason Goliath works against WoP.
-
I would have to go with Mary Mags.
