Are these types of cards better suited for type 2?

I have built a type 1 deck around these cards, but I get a feeling this route may be a poor choice.

Yes I agree with you.

I have seen these cards perform better in t2. Not to say you can't come up with a great deck using these cards for t1, they may not have the most ease of use in simply rescuing and blocking at any given time. They are situational cards and it's hard to pull off Four Horsemen for a relatively minor return.

Angels martyrs gives you at least some synergy with them in t1. The horsemen themselves have access to a lot of great enhancements and War can auto block with certain weapons, along with Conquer as well.

They can be strong in lower level metas but I find judges Assyrians, or throne splash for example to just be a better pick.

One thing to consider with Four Horsemen is a demon defense using Red Dragon, Abaddon, Dragons Minions with Gates. An alternate win condition for Martyrs is gates your deck to a big Antipas with Crown of Thorns. Joy makes him even better :-)

Locust from the pit is definitely more of a t2 card but I did have a very successful t1 deck which in had one in the reserve. Having abaddon cbn searching/banding to them  in battle was great to avoid getting stomped by AoTL.

Here is a Martyrs Type 1 list that did really well last year. http://www.cactusforums.com/complete-decks/'revelation-music'-nats-2017-4th-place/

The others seem to be more Type 2 oriented but Martyrs can be very good. Usually they are centered around Justin Martyr, Polycarp, and Peter and kind of expand out from there. At least in my experience.
