Deck building question

Hi there,

just wanna make sure I understood rules correctly:

To my understanding in a 56 card deck I can only use either John or John but I can use James and James, Son of Zebedee together.

Am I right here?

Thanks in advance!

Bye

You can use James and James, son of Zebedee, but they cannot both be in play at the same time.

Thank you.

Why can't they be in play at the same time?

Thank you.

Why can't they be in play at the same time?
Unique characters cannot be under the same player's control (because that'd create a paradox).
So it's okay for my opponent to have a David (red) in play, and for me to have a David (green) in play, but if I captured his David (red), then I can't play down a David (green) of my own.
They also can't be in battle at the same time. So if my opponent rescues with a converted Gomer, I can't block with a Gomer of my own.

This is no longer true.  Captured characters do not count towards the unique character limit.

You cannot control more than one copy of a unique character in battle, territory, and/or set-aside (excluding captured characters).  Duplicates are protected from abilities that would cause them to enter play if you already have a copy.

EDIT:  Realized this rule is not really spelled out in the rulebooks we have, but it exists.  I am adding it to The Rulings Post.

But aren't James and James, Son of Zebedee complete different cards since they have different titles? Why can't they be together in play at the same time?

It is the same unique person.  Even though David and King David have different names, both are David.  James is the same James who is the son of Zebedee, brother of John.  Thus, it is the same person, and you cannot control both versions.

Not the same person, so you can have both in play.
