I need some advice!

Hi all! I'm new to Redemption (and to this message board), therefore, I'm not very experienced. I just built a T1 deck last night that's very body heavy. Is that okay or should I swap some characters for more enhancements? If you need a card list to help you visualize, just ask.

hi! Welcome to the game and the boards! Yes, it would be helpful to post the deck list so we could see what you are talking about and give hopefully some helpful advice!  :)

Thanks for posting the deck list and good start! You have some solid cards, such as The Woman at the Well, John, and Great Faith. Some suggestions I have are to use more battle-winning enhancements- meaning they remove the opposing character from battle. This can be done through such abilities as discard, underdeck, withdraw, convert, and capture. Preaching the Truth is a very nice battle winner you already have that works great with your spread New Testament offense. Also, something quite important to think through is initiative- once you get some more battle-winners in the deck, how are you going to get to play them? Some ways are having low-numbered characters, or characters that allow you to play an enhancement, and enhancements that interrupt the battle and allow you to play the next enhancement. If you're going to try to win battles by the numbers, you'll need negate abilities (like Sapphira from the G/H decks) and banding really helps too, like with the Lying Spirit evil character you have. Just some tips to start! I encourage you to look through decks that are posted on the boards and see how the cards work together.

Once again, welcome to Redemption!  :)

Okay so I replaced Begging to Go Back with Pharaoh's Hard Heart and I'm thinking of adding Outburst of Anger and/or Pharaoh's Murderous Order. I replaced Joy with Reach of Desperation and I want to add Bravery of Priscilla and/or Lamb's Righteousness (and maybe even keep Joy). Obviously, doing all of this will increase my deck size. Is that okay or should I keep it at 50?

I would recommend keeping the deck at 50, because Son of God and New Jerusalem are the cards you really want to get to and the more cards there are in your deck, the harder that becomes. Of the enhancements you mentioned, Outburst of Anger would be good and Reach of Desperation is great! The others aren't as helpful for winning battles because they don't remove the opposing character or set you up to do so. I would highly recommend buying the I/J starter decks, which you can find for around $10-$15 on Three Lions Gaming or Amazon/eBay, as there are lots of great cards in them, and even matching most of the colors you're using, including white, purple, good gold, and gray. As you'll see, Ruth rocks!! 8)

50 gives you the highest probability of getting to the cards you want faster. That said if this is for casual play you may have more fun adding interesting combos and playing more cards to add variety.

A great way to build is start at 50 then add cards you want to test. If the added cards play well then you can cut out cards that are less effective. Then try adding other cards and testing more and repeat this process until you have reached a point that you really like the deck.  For tournament play staying at 50 cards tends to be the best answer unless your deck has shifted to a really defensive heavy deck type.

I would highly recommend getting the I/J starter decks. They will give you many excellent cards to use, some of which are used in the top decks in tournaments even. You could then take the best cards from what you have and combine it with the I/J cards to make a pretty decent deck. If you want to expand on that more, try getting Faith of our Fathers (FooF) or Rock of Ages (RoA) tins. They come with cards of specific brigades and themes as well as other booster packs. Or Thesaurus Ex Preteritus (TxP) and Disciples (Di) packs. They come with some older, but generally rarer and better cards, as well as a few new and generally powerful cards.

In regards to what you already have, one way I like to try improving a deck is to take out any card I think there's a decent chance I won't use in almost all games. Chances are you'll be under 50, but then you can add cards that you think have a higher likelihood of being used. Of course you still have to make sure you have enough characters and enhancements of certain types. There is no strict rule for what ratio of characters to enhancements but generally you try to have at least as many characters as enhancements. More than that depends on the deck you are playing. The best way to find out is to play some games. If you find you often have characters sitting in your territory but no enhancements to use, put some more enhancements in. If you find you often have your hand filled with enhancements and no characters to play them on, put more of those in.

You could also look through the T1 deck advice section and the completed deck section on the forums and look at the decks. See how many characters and enhancements they have, as well as what types of characters and enhancements they have. You can also see what people say about the decks and gather information from that.

If you're into that sort of thing, try building decks and playing the game on Lackey, online. That way, you aren't restricted by not having cards and you can get a better idea of what makes a good deck, then use your cards to try to build something similar.

About 50 cards, people have debated much about this topic. But for your deck, it probably won't make a huge difference, since it is still quite basic. Worrying about being a few cards over only really matters if you are building a deck for a high level of play. However, it is still probably a good idea to keep it as small as possible. Like I said near the beginning, try to get rid of cards you won't use often, since you will draw them instead of the cards you need, and then they will just clutter up your hand afterwards.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for all the helpful advice! Maybe as I play more my decks won't be so basic :P I've been hearing a lot of good things about the I/J starter deck so I'll see about getting it. I've looked through a lot of the deck lists here but the members there are sort of advanced so I don't know what they're talking about a lot of the time. My deck is now back to 50 cards and I'll see about downloading Lackey too (people use Lackey more than RTS, right?).

No one uses RTS anymore. Lackey is much better.

Also, there's a list of abbreviations here: http://www.cactusgamedesign.com/message_boards/redemption-card-play/redemption174-abbreviations-acronyms-shortcuts-aliases/

If you want to look up cards or rules, check out the wiki: http://redemption.wikia.com/wiki/Redemption_Wiki

That could help if you're looking at decks. And when you do look at decks, don't think as much about the exact cards that are in it, think more about what types of cards it has. The number battle winners, counter cards (cards specifically meant to stop another card, type of card or strategy) and others. And what types of enhancements are used with with type of character and such.

I would recommend adding authority of christ. It can be found in the unlimited(blue) packs or as a National tournament promotional card. If you combine that with the ethiopian treasurers, you can wipe out their entire defense before they even have the chance to block.

Both those cards are pretty good but not that easy to find. I'll try to look anyways though. And I guess I can just add them to my Lackey deck.

Actually, authority of Christ (AoC) is available at three lions gaming for 50 cents apiece. And Ethiopian treasurer is available for 25 cents. Lots of pretty good cards are available for quite cheap there

That's good. I didn't know that Authority of Christ would be that cheap considering even the non-promo version is a rare card.

It's because it's from the oldest set, so there are many of them around now. Also, the promo version made the regular one unfavourable for tournament play

I would also recommend getting tin 19. It has a couple of New Testament Females and some good white brigade battle winners. It also has a fortress called The Garden Tomb that will sometimes allow you to get free souls. In addition to that, I comes with a lost soul. Not a great one, but better than a no special ability soul.
