Building a defense: Heretics/Magicians

My main deck got dismantled and broken up when I left for college (with my permission), so now I'm looking at new deck types. Thus far, I haven't been paying much attention to the new cards (I haven't had money to get them or time to go to tournaments). Given the current situation of the game, would Heretics/Magicians be a good defense for a balanced deck? I know there's a bit of synergy now with Simon the Magician and the False Prophet. What cards would be needed for this defense?

Also, what offenses would pair well with this? Prophets, perhaps? Clay?

I could be wrong but you may want to avoid trying to combo those 2 defensive themes.

Heretics require sites to perform at the highest level and magicians have their own gadgets like charms, divination.  I'm not sure it can all fit with an offense that is able to get to 5 against balanced decks. Plus charms hurts site lock with the heretics. Charms is so good it's hard to cut though.

If your doing this though I think hypocrisy is a must. It's super good and the combo with mayhem is really nasty.  With it you could potentially put your opponent at hand limit and then tell them it's their turn so they can't draw and then mayhem after their draw phase to set them back an additional 10 cards. The combo is minus 13 when it triggers perfectly.

I would agree these are going to be hard to put together in a T1 deck and still call it 'balanced' since they require so much support.

However, I do think that with the new set, Heretics are definitely viable in T1 in my opinion.  I would probably run them without Magicians, and just add things like Charms to deal with the heroes Heretics cannot otherwise handle.

We should do a thread for this like we did for building the NT spread offense that Josiah did.
