Hating the Light would suffer the same drawback as Magician's Snakes. The "while in battle" on both cards means that Grapes could target it for Discard and shuffle unimpeded.

So does magi snakes work vs AOTL?
It's stuff like this that confuses the mess out of me. To me, it would logically protect from both grapes and AOTL, then I find out it's useless Vs. grapes. 

Snakes stops AotL. It also stops Grapes from discarding the character, but if Grapes instead discards Magician's Snakes, then the protect is no longer active due to the card no longer being in battle, and thus Grapes shuffles the characters.
