Title: Using Bear
Post by: jesse on July 25, 2017, 10:01:06 PM
I've got a question about Bear (Cow).

The ability is: "You may look at X random cards in opponent's hand and shuffle lamb icon cards. Protect Lost Souls from rescue unless Bear is discarded. Cannot be interrupted by a good card."

If you lose by the numbers, either straight up or mutual destruction, are the Lost Souls not protected or is the battle over first?

Hey has anyone had much success with Bear? Any tips? Thanks!

If Bear is discarded as part of battle resolution either by losing or by mutual, the souls aren't protected.

Thanks - the ability doesn't seem that strong then, since you practically have to win the battle for it to work (in which case the souls would be "protected" anyway in terms of you wouldn't surrender one). The one combo I can think of is with the card "Escape" where you ItB and return your EC to hand.

When CoW first came out, I ran Bear in my animal defenses and had decent success but with Behemoth and Wild Dogs there are better options.

Also, it basically means your opponent can't capture Bear, remove Bear from the game, shuffle Bear, etc. without interrupting it first.

escape wouldn't work because you interrupt bear's ability when you are returning him to hand which stops the protection

Which a good card can't interrupt anyways.

It also means they can't just ignore it. They have to win by numbers or play an enhancement that discards it.

Well you guys have convinced me to give Bear a try in my deck! Thanks again!

Combining Bear and Judas seems like it could be fun...(i.e. if they are using discard abilities, you block with Judas. If they have non-discard abilities, you block with Bear).   :D

Bear's ability is basically: "Protected from withdraw, underdeck, shuffle, banish, ignore, and capture."

Disagree I think it's better then that.

It also targets hand and can be stand alone.

Interactions such as 7th seal make you correct but outside of Bear's owner kicking Bear out of battle themselves, that's pretty much how the ability functions.

The best counter for a small hero against bear is AotL closely followed by Grapes. The bear has a decent chance of underdecking those 2 prominent counters.

I'd love to see someone make a T2 "Bear-itics" deck  8)

If you happen to band multiple Bears into battle does your opponent only have to discard one of them in order to not protect Lost Souls or is each Bear referring to itself, and thus all Bears in battle have to be discarded?

I believe they would have to discard all Da Bears.  8)
