The absolute best way to counter TGT (which is also the reason it was made) is to use a single-brigade defense with a protect fortress. Putting a fortress discarder(/incapacitator) in your deck will usually do the trick as well.

You can also put in the same Heroes, or Heroes that will band to the opponent's Heroes, and use his own card against him.
