Title: POLL: How would you rank these character abilities?
Post by: stefferweffer on November 22, 2010, 04:56:06 PM
I'm mainly curious what conclusions others have reached concerning certain character special abilities.

All things being equal, of these abilities, what would be your top 3 when choosing characters (heros and ECs), and why?  And if I'm forgetting an important one please let me know.  Thanks for participating.

Battle by the Numbers (i.e Moses)
Access to all Sites (Heros only obviously, i.e. King's Daughter)
Enhancements cannot be interrupted/negated (i.e. Michael)
Protection from Capture/Discard, etc (i.e. Lydia)
Banding (i.e Tribal Elder)
Warrior Class Indentifier (i.e. Naaman)
Immediately play an enhancement (i.e. Ethiopian Treasurer)
Search your own draw/discard pile (i.e. Micah)
Pre-block Ignore (i.e. Watchful Servant)
Search/Reveal cards from opponent's draw pile (i.e. Woman at the Well)
Choose the Blocker/Rescuer (i.e. Ehud)
Immediately discard/capture/return a character (i.e. Egyptian Warden/Jepthah)
Immunity (Mainly ECs - i.e. Red Dragon)
Draw a card (i.e. Chloe)

My top 3?

1) Banding - Better access to sites and lost souls, CM and AOTL are not automatic wins, Opponent has more targets to get rid of, Negates 3 popular "Immune to lone heroes" ECs, Use your opponent's cards, Win by Numbers if there are no enhancements (especially booster draft).
2) Choose the blocker/rescuer - Very hard to defend against, good for getting initiative
3) Enhancements cannot be negated/interrupted - If they get initiative, they win.

If I were to add a number 4 it would be Battle by Numbers, which used to be my number 1 or 2, but there is too much CBN and CBP stuff now.

For many years, my deck consisted of the following Heroes:
Captain (FBTN)
Strong Angel (FBTN)
Jacob (banding/play first)
Tribal Elder (banding)
Widow (ignore)
Phinehas (protect, CBN Zeal)
Joshua (CBN)
Priests of Christ (search)/Melchizedek (protect, bi-color)

I would say as far as most effective for the primary purpose (Rescuing/preventing rescue of Lost Souls)

Heroes
Ignore
Cannot be negated
Play enhancement

Basically these do the best to be unstoppable by defense, if they can't block (for the most part) they can't stop you, if they can't negate your stuff you get the first enhancement off (or interrupt) you can easily win and you play first you can devastate before your opponent can stop you.

Evil Characters
Immediately Remove from battle
Play enhancements
Protection

Basically to stop your opponents unstoppable stuff (protect yourself or play/win before your opponent can stop you)

But I think a variety of character abilities is more useful than just picking the "best" ones

6. Battle by the Numbers (i.e Moses)
10. Access to all Sites (Heros only obviously, i.e. King's Daughter)
11. Enhancements cannot be interrupted/negated (i.e. Michael) (Joshua as an exception)
3. Protection from Capture/Discard, etc (i.e. Lydia)
7. Banding (i.e Tribal Elder)
13. Warrior Class Indentifier (i.e. Naaman)
4. Immediately play an enhancement (i.e. Ethiopian Treasurer)
5. Search your own draw/discard pile (i.e. Micah)
2. Pre-block Ignore (i.e. Watchful Servant)
12. Search/Reveal cards from opponent's draw pile (i.e. Woman at the Well)
1. Choose the Blocker/Rescuer (i.e. Ehud)
9. Immediately discard/capture/return a character (i.e. Egyptian Warden/Jepthah) (Jephthah as an exception. He's l33t)
8. Immunity (Mainly ECs - i.e. Red Dragon)
A lot of these depends on when in the game you get them...

Why not King Asa for site acess? King's Daughter had only a small one part special ability.  :)

He was just throwing out examples, not the best ones (by most people's standards).

1. Ignore. Ignorance is bliss. TGT simplifies my life.
2. BBN. Captain band is sick.
3. CBN. You have initiative, you win.

Ignore is dead, for the time being.

Not dead. There are a (few) ways to keep it alive.

CBN banding on EC's, CBN banding on N.T. Heroes, Protection from Discard on O.T. Heroes (preferably CBN).

I would say
1. Banding simply because you can mix & match characters (available) with abilities you need specific to the situation.  Its versatility is difficult to beat, you can combine it will all the options you listed.
2. Play an pre-combat enhancement because its an advantage over your opponent causing them to react to you instead of vise versa.  Action is faster than reaction.
3. Enhancements cannot be negated, combined with my number two would be very powerful, maybe even unfair, haha.
