Does anyone think it could be possible to intimidate your opponent out of making a rescue attempt? What I mean by this is that you could use cards like Go Into Captivity ( If your warrior class Evil Character is in battle, you may discard this card to capture a Hero.) to prevent them from making a rescue attempt on the basis of not wanting to lose their Hero. Although I know it kind of depends on the person it might work.

Bluffing and guessing is certainly part of the game, but it's not a very good opponent that will just never even try to rescue with such an artifact up. If such a card is a present threat, the opponent can easily attack with a subpar Hero or a band of Heroes, forcing the artifact owner into the choice of capturing suboptimally or keeping it up as a threat.

I agree. But the best bluff of all is activating that card when you have no WC evil characters in your deck, HOPING they will play DON on an artifact you could never have used anyway

Gabe refers less to any cards he may have had on the table and more to the fact that he is indeed Gabe.

As soon as they are about to go out act like you are going to play a card like Martyr but do not really have it in your hand.

Whereas it is possible to bluff sometimes, in general (there are weird cases where this isn't true) it's not a good idea to not attack when you opponent has a card like Going into Captivity or Christian Martyr unless you think in the next turn or two you'll have a way around it (such as protection) or your only viable character is too valuable to lose. Because not attacking won't get you closer to winning, whereas cards like Going into Captivity get used up and giving your opponent essentially more than one block out of them when they are usually only good for (at max) one block isn't a good tactic.

I've always found tactics like that to be cheap and unsportsmanlike. I don't think "bluffing" in itself is the way to play the game. Intimidating (having KoT or Writ out, Charms, etc.) is one thing, however, purposefully intending to deceive (like your suggestion) is another thing entirely.

I have found the way you phrase the declaration of a rescue attempt can change the blocker they use.

As long as you do not see something on the table that can outright discard any of your possible rescue attempts at face value alone and is not an expendable block, there really is no reason not to make a rescue attempt every single turn. Unfortunately bluffing defensively in this game is nowhere near as prevalent or useful as in other card games.

This thread is exactly why I dislike RTS. More than 33% of redemption is screwing with your opponent's head and reading their face.

In that perspective Redemption is kind of like poker. You have to read your opponent to see what he is thinking. The way to beat the bluff or see if he is bluffing or not is very simple. You have to try to make a rescue with some hero and base the answer off that.

Confidence can sometimes force people into a situation, in combination with what SomeKittens said, but defensively. Example. Asking, "Is that it?" after they push their heroes out, smugly push King Saul (evil) into battle, and ask for initiative (if you indeed have it). Of course, they think you have Plot and are going to drop AotL instantly. It is the right play, but it's nice to get things like that out of the way when it actually wasn't necessary.

Being entirely too eager to ask for initiative can force your opponent to use Writ/Martyr etc, even when you've got nothing.

I still haven't goaded someone into using a Mayhem yet, that's next on my list.

You could also push Trembling Demon out for a block and quickly ask for initiative, hoping your opponent is a baddie that reactively says yes.

It's safe for me to say,"not a good idea". 5 de structive sins, 2 FA, 2 Martyr, a Burial, and two water jars. bleh. Next year (if I play) I'm going to wear something really ragged and will do my best to speak incoherently.

You looked quite spiffy. Weren't you going to a wedding afterward? (though I think Maly wins that one, with the same getup, but he also had his wild hair).

Tim's tie was a subdued purple, not extravagant pink like mine.

Back on topic, I find the intimidate bluff works well. I used to always put up Assyria's Tribute as soon as I could, then let my brother assume I had Siege Army in my hand. It worked like Burial Shroud
