How do tokens work?

(referencing today's Land of Redemption article and the new card, Majestic Heavens)

I've never played a game using tokens before so I'm confused on how they work. In the article it says,
Quote
"For game purposes, it will represent a specific card type with attributes that are associated with the chosen card type. For example, a Hero token will need to be generic or unique, human, symbolic or angel, have a brigade, a testament and/or book reference and numeric stats. I fully expect there to be some really cool looking player created tokens in the form of custom cards. Just imagine the possibilities!"

So do we have to make a custom "card" for each card type token - in Majestic Heavens' instance, a LS? Like have a Redemption card-sized piece of paper cut out, write "Lost Soul" and the testament it is? I'm assuming it will have no special ability? I saw some people mention they could use things like dice to be the token, but what if there are multiple tokens for multiple card types? How would you (and your opponent) tell them apart and know what each one is?

You can use just about anything of reasonable size as a token. If you'd like to use a piece of paper with the card type you can do that. Sticky notes will work especially well! But like I mentioned in the article it could also be a coin, your car keys, a rock, pieces to another game, an empty sleeve that doesn't match your deck.

I'm going to make some personalized card size tokens myself.

Will Nats participants receive Majestic in addition to Whirlwind? If so, I’m assuming it’s not playable in Nats decks since that would be pretty much the first tournament it’s released in, correct?

I would like to make some custom "card" tokens too! What happens though if there are multiple tokens representing different card types simultaneously in play? Are all players just supposed to remember what each represents even though they might be dice/keys/etc?

No, Majestic Heavens will be for tournaments in the 2018-19 season.

To further clarify Justin's answer (which is accurate) the seasonal promos are available during a 3 month window and are only given out in lieu of the Local or District promo (so no, they are not available at Nationals).

I would like to make some custom "card" tokens too! What happens though if there are multiple tokens representing different card types simultaneously in play? Are all players just supposed to remember what each represents even though they might be dice/keys/etc?

There's exactly one card that creates tokens right now and it only creates one type of token so I don't think there will be much confusion.

Did I miss a seasonal promo last year during 2017's said window?

Thank you!

And FYI!! If you missed out on Rapha the back to back local/district in San Antonio on July 6-7 will be providing one to the participants!

Yes I'm aware of that, I was wondering more for the overall understanding of tokens as well as I'm sure that we will have more card types in the future for tokens to be. Even now though, say with a 4 player multiplayer game, it could be difficult to remember which lost souls are OT and which are NT if they are all represented by random things.

Obviously we'll need to take that into account as we make more token creator cards, but for MH specifically I would recommend using unsleeved generic Lost Souls (have some of each testament with you).  8)

That's a good idea for the LSs. I've just never played a CCG with tokens before so just trying to understand. Thanks!  :)

If you put Humble in Majestic Heavens, do you choose which testament it is, or does it count as both?
ANB is good. Change my mind.

You choose, and can choose different testaments for the topdecking and token.

Seems like a solid choice.  8)

How appropriate that the "best" Lost Soul to place in the Majestic Heavens is the one named "Humble."

So, as my brothers can attest, I like to sit and mess with Photoshop. Gabe's comment on making custom tokens inspired me, so I tried to mock up a couple.

Note: Not sure if the tokens should have specific references, but it looks nicer in my opinion. Also, pretty sure I have the fonts wrong, but I had to guestimate based on reference pictures and did my best to work from there.

Probably not. Unity is only your cards. Tokens probably have no owner, so they don't qualify as anyone's cards.

I'd like to point out since tokens can be anything if you did want to make your own custom token cards like these sweet looking Lost Soul Tokens and sleeve them I'm pretty positive they would be legal for tournament play

There's actually no need to sleeve tokens. In fact it would be better to leave them unsleeved so that they don't end up getting mixed into a deck, discard pile, etc. If you wanted to sleeve them for protective purposes, be sure to have very different sleeves. Prior to the release of Majestic Heavens I'm also guessing the Elder team will be discussing further guidelines for Tokens.

It might be worth it to do some research with other games that use tokens. Almost every CCG has some sort of token mechanic. That will answer a lot of your questions.

In terms of gameplay im assuming the lost soul tokens are rescueable and that being the case if you fall away it does it go back to your territory as if it were a permanent card or does it just disappear? Also if it is buried im assuming it wobt be able to be revived or does it count as a lost soul in your discard?

I guess really it comes down to how does the token changing zones affect its existence?
