Title: Fun Banding
Post by: BubbleBoy on July 31, 2008, 05:05:55 PM
Israelite Archer is a human whose special ability states that he may band to any warrior class hero, and can discard any evil character in opponent's territory, but then is discarded after battle. Angel of God is a warrior class angel that protects all human heroes from discard abilities. If you band Israelite Archer to AoG, then AoG's special ability makes it so that Israelite Archer may discard an evil character without being discarded afterwards. Think about that, eh!

Israelite Archer - "May band to any warrior class Hero. May discard any warrior class Evil Character in a territory but then discard Israelite Archer at end of battle."

Angel of God - "Protect all human Heroes from discard abilities.  Protect all Heroes from capture."

That's very interesting...As far as I'm seeing that would work.

I'm not so sure I agree that this works, although I have been wrong plenty of times before.

My question is whether "protect" is retroactive. Banding abilities are applied after other printed abilities, so the decision to discard an EC and cause your own discard later has already been applied before the band to Angel of God and his ability can kick in. My understanding of "protect" is that it affects what can be targeted. Isrealite Archer was already targeted. Nothing has been negated, so I think Isrealite Archer still gets discarded.

This works, it has been confirmed in rules already.

I missed the discussion. So is the protect ability retroactive or is there a re-targeting at the end of the battle that is stopped?

The discard part of IA's ability activates at the end of battle. By that time, he is protected from discard.

Bill Voigt used this combo in his type 2 deck at Natz this year... Needless to say it killed my warrior-class defense with 5 Israelite archers banded in.

I have a purple deck.  one thing i tried that has had some success is playing
w/ roa melchezidek who is teal/purple. redirect melchezidek's blessing on israelite
archer and BAM.  It kills... and you don't have to add in another hero either ;D

Nice and you get to draw a card!
Though this would be more effective in a deck that doesn't thrive from WC (6/7 king cough cough)
