Weren't they suspended because they got free stuff just because they were football stars?
They didn't have to pay anything for the tattoos.

That's not even why the players are suspended....

Actually, it is. Selling the championship rings and other stuff is not explicitly forbidden. However, receiving discounts, merchandise, and cash in exchange for their namesake is forbidden.

I was actually being playful, since exchanging autographs for tattoos does not rank very high in the paid-to-play category, whereas asking a college for $10,000 in order to get a letter-of-intent would.

I agree with CBS Sports that these players are going to get a lot more punishment from Ohio State fans than they will from the NCAA. Selling the trinket they got from beating Michigan, and the Big Ten championship rings, will not sit well with the faithful.  :o

I have yet to see why grown men sit around the living room and scream at the TV, and why grandmothers are shaking bottles full of rocks in my ear at football games. I have yet to see why so many people's lives revolve around the super bowl. And I have yet to see why people who enjoy playing football hate people who don't. That is why I don't like football.

PS. I like playing catch

:)

If you read the rest of your post, as well as the reason this thread was started, you will find that the exact opposite is true.

Why are ladies shaking rocks in your ears? I've never heard of that before.
I also enjoy playing catch with a football but that wouldn't be classified as football really so I didn't mention it.

All the ESPN reports state that that Pryor (with assumed that the other are the same) is suspended for recieveing improper benefits having to do with the pawning of rings and other awards. They also interviewed Pryor's coach from high school and he stated that Pryor probably didn't know/think about the ramifications of sellings some of his stuff, and that he most likely just wanted to help out his mother. I am from about 20 mins away from Pryor's house, and his area is considered "the projects" or what have you. I'm betting Pryor just sold some of his stuff to help with some bills or something without thinking about it.

The improper benefits were from the tattoo shop. The selling of the merchandise was just poor judgment.

That is why the university is not being punished. This situation about selling the stuff is a case of miscommunication. However, getting basically free tattoos is an improper benefit. Since the relative value is low, the university is not getting hammered.

Pick one NFL team and one college football team. Once you have a team to root for it will seem a lot more enjoyable. Also you don't have to pick the local team, but if they're a team you enjoy, go for it. It will be easier to go and watch them in their actual stadium one day and not just on TV. Once you have your own team to root for, it will make you part of the action.
My Teams: Atlanta Braves, NY Giants, Miami Hurricanes Football, Duke Basketball, Cleveland Cavs

Hmm, I see sports (any sport) as a way for people to relax. People are different, yet somewhat similar. You could also be asking this same question about the difference between people enjoying baseball in the U.S. and cricket in other countries. The objects of most "sports" are typically similar: Get object A to area B while avoiding C (Football, basketball, soccer, hockey, etc...). Although, some sports have the opposing teams share the same "endpoint." Such as, golf, baseball, and bowling. The difference is size, color, shape, and material of the object, the number of players, the rules, and the field of play.  Other than that, the basic fundamentals are the same. Soccer (Or more accurately futbol) is pretty much the exact same thing as football, except the roles are reversed. (Understand now, I'm oversimplifying things to make my point easier to understand): Soccer (With the exception of the goalie and putting the ball back into play) is played completely with the feet, and Football (With the exception of the kicker) is played completely with the hands.

The United States has had quite a history of doing things our own way and coming up with "new" ideas. That is why football, baseball, and basketball, are favored in the U.S. (Although there are more ancient sports that are eerily similar, but I guess we can receive credit for introducing these "new" sports.

Short version: guys like competition (For the most part), so anything that has a competitive atmosphere is attractive. Certain sports originate in specific countries, and thus are more popular there than anywhere else. Countries that don't really have their own sports, adopt the sports of other countries. Cricket, soccer, etc... have been around a lot longer than football, baseball, and basketball, thus they have been adopted by other countries that have been around for awhile before "our" sports were even discovered. Baseball is becoming somewhat popular in Japan, and football has been modified in Canada and rugby, which is similar to football, is popular in quite a few countries. Soccer, however, is also very simple (in principle), requires little equipment, and is very inexpensive, so it's quite easy to see why it's popular in many countries, especially poor countries.  Basically all you need is a ball and some players, a basic understanding of the rules, and you're all set!

This question has always remained in my mind. I still don't understand why anyone would like to get pounded with the ball and by other people. Could anyone explain this to me?
uuuhh, getting pounded with the ball isn't part of the game unless the quarterback throws it to his receiver who maybe you and it pounds you in the head if your not wearing a helmet.
it's a really fun game to watch.
it really is honestly a spectator sport.
it appeals to guys cause it's a tough game with tough players who take a tackle and injuries as part of the game when plays go wrong.
it's fast paced, alot of action going on and it just has that quality that sparks an intrest in guys.
it's just a manly kind of sport

"Sexism" is made up for the most part. And what it really means is "girls can say whatever and guys better shut up about everything we don't like." Same as racism means "minorities can say whatever and whitie better shut up about everything we don't like."
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

Well, this took a sharp left turn for the worse.

I don't even know why we got to the fifth page on a question with a very simple answer: BECAUSE IT'S FOOTBALL!
