Redemption Fantasy Football League - Review

Okay, I think everyone who participated in this year's Redemption FF league commissioned by Kirk on the MFL website has a sour taste in their mouths.  I believe it's probably near unanimous by now that we switch back to Yahoo.  But before we do that, let's discuss the problems and see if their resolvable.  If they can be, then I see MFL as a way more flexible portal than some of the others.

Here are my pros and cons off the top of my head:

Pros:
1. Flexibility
2. Fun features
3. Quick access to loads of data
4. Customizable

Cons:
1. Waiver process
2. The flip side to flexibility is more manager manual intervention
3. Data overload
4. Projections not as good
5. No decimal points (that I can see)

The biggest issue I have right now with fantasy football is the injuries and game time decisions by coaches to hold players out.  Probably the only reason I'd like to continue with MFL is to make use of their backup system to be able to sub players.  In fantasy baseball, an injury requires the manager to update their daily lineup and over a week may not have that much impact on the outcome.  In fantasy football, injuries and game time decisions by coaches have a HUGE impact and in many instances decide the outcome for the week.  It would be nice to have a backup be inserted into a lineup in the case of a game time decision or if a player is injured early in a game (like in the first half).

Thoughts??

I was most annoyed by the waiver/free agent claims and the lineup setting processes.  MFL had poor usability in these areas.  Can't comment on the draft b/c I wasn't able to be there for it, but from the comments I recall, that was also a poor experience.  Yahoo was better - ESPN has the best that I've experienced, though.

I did enjoy the information MFL provided.  The links they had to team analyzers were great, the recaps and previews were neat (though they got somewhat stale), the power rankings (especially the efficiency numbers) were cool.

My preference for next year would be ESPN, though going back to Yahoo would not be terrible.

MFL was horrible in the two most important aspects for a Fantasy Football website: Draft and Waiver/Free Agent Pick-ups.  To me, that means any and all arguments in favor of MFL are neutered.

I also prefer ESPN but yahoo is also good.

I would not play if we used MFL.

Unrelated to what site we use, I don't think we need to have a two conference league because of how many people went MIA.  Just have a 12 team ESPN league or a 12-16 team Yahoo league.
May you prosper greatly!

Not trying to offer excuses, but I think lots of people might have gone MIA because of the system. I know I personally really only set lineups for the most part because of how obnoxious the system was.

Okay, I've been looking at the customization options on all the different fantasy sites.  I think I'd like to go with a custom ESPN league.  There are options that I would like to see used next year that I believe will be beneficial for my main issue with fantasy football - injuries and game time decisions.  Here are the options I'd like to use:

1. Lock roster positions individually at scheduled game time - This will allow managers to adjust their lineup if coaches from later games make game time decisions to hold out players.  To me this is a MUST have for next season!

2. Use Team Quarterback roster position - Ideally, there should be a team roster position for every roster position but at least this is a start.  If you have a TQB of Green Bay, for instance, you would get the stats from Rodgers AND Flynn (if Rodgers got injured).  To me this is a MUST have for next season!

3. Use Head Coach (HC) roster position - This would be the best option for the case when other position players get injured.  Of course, the HC gets points based on all positions so I'm not sure how well it would work with a roster of specific positions.

4. Use an IR position - If we used it I would only specify one IR position.  There were a couple of instances this year where I saw a team drop a top-line player who was injured only to have another team pick him up when they make a quick recovery.  If we get at least two of the three options above, then I'm not too concerned with IR.  It would just be an extra bonus for managers to be more flexible with their rosters.

I used the HC in a league I commissioned on ESPN for a year.  I don't recall all of the things you could get points for, but I think they were W/L, margin of victory/loss, and mebbe one or two other things.  It was a position that I could never really get balanced points wise, so I dropped it after a year.  The position option I did like from ESPN was having a punter.  They get points for net average, inside 20, inside 10, fair catches, touchbacks, etc.  That one was easier to balance than the HC was.

As for TQB, I've never really like that idea.  Injuries suck, but they are a part of football, and sometimes they take out a star player during a game (see Peterson, Adrian).  I had a couple games this year where I got hit by injuries (Lynch's late scratch, Peterson's ankle, Forte, Fred Jackson) plus a suspension (Fred Davis).  Dealing with an injury to your star player is, I feel, important for an owner to have to consider.  If I'd have lost Drew Brees (especially after losing Cutler), I'd have had to find someone to replace him - this is what I prefer, since this is how NFL teams have to deal with their own injury issues.

An injured reserve slot would be fantastic.  Individual roster slot locks as well (though we did have those this year, and I thought we did at Yahoo as well).

Oh, and speaking of Fred Davis' suspension, it would be nice if free agents didn't lock after the first game of the week.  I believe I found out about his suspension on the Friday of that week, with the Thursday game already played.  Couldn't pick anyone up to replace him though, since the waivers had reset.  This really only affects us once Thursday games start.

I have tried out several fantasy football sites and ESPN has probably been the best so far. I didn't like the how you couldn't pick up free agents after the first game started in our MFL league after the first game had started.

1. Agreed- this allows more flexibility with questionable players.

2. Not a big fan of. Injuries are part of the game and I can't see just doing this for the quarterback positon.

3. Not a big fan of.

4. I do like having one IR position so you can keep a player who is out a few weeks without taking up a bench spot.
