My antivirus software says this site has been involved with scams or fraud and can transmit malicious stuff. However I unblocked the site and nothing is wrong with it, it works fine. Just saying so that others are not worried if they get a similar message.

Glad to join again this year, even if my personal team (KY) is watching from the NIT :(

I'm the exact opposite. I will not be joining the brackets, even though my team (Liberty University) is playing in the tournament (albeit with one of the worst records in tournament history).  ;D

Hot tip: No matter what the Vegas odds/experts are saying, do not expect #11 Minnesota to beat #6 UCLA. Go ahead and pick all the upsets you want, just don't try that one. As someone who has ridden the roller coaster of being a Gopher fan this season, I assure you the ride is about to come to an abrupt halt.

Instead, go with #11 Belmont to beat #6 Arizona.

I'm just kidding, I don't care about Belmont sports at all. My school pride goes towards the  music department.

I agree with most of this. I am about as hopeful a Gophs fan as possible, and I want to pick us so badly, but I don't think they are a valid team. My dad and I didn't think they should even get in. It seems the media thinks we are better than we do... I think Minnesota is one of the most talented teams in the whole tourney, but we are not consistent and do not always come to play. I also wonder about Tubby Smith. He is a very good recruiter and a good fund-raiser, but I question his in-game coaching and his players' discipline.
I would love to see us get to the sweet sixteen though, and know that we can.
Just a few rants from a frustrated Gophers' fan.  ;)

By the way, 11 so far in the league.

Minnesota got in but Iowa didn't?  That's worse logic than all the ANB erratas put together.

It all comes down to RPI. We were a top ten team in 2012, but the new year brought about a seemingly new (and much worse) team and our RPI was as high as 15 at one point. It ended in the mid-30's, but apparently no team with an RPI less than 40 has missed the NCAA tournament before. Trust me, I've heard a lot about RPI in the last few weeks.

Also, we DID beat a No. 1 team a few weeks ago. It seems like a long, long time ago, but it did happen.

Iowa didn't beat a ranked team all year, they had a lower rpi than Minn, and Minn had the fourth highest SOS (strength of schedule) in the country. In Iowa's non conference sked, they only beat one team who is in the whole tourney (Iowa State). I like Iowa, but I don't think you could really make a case for them in the tourney unless you just automatically put in the top eight Big 10 teams or whatever.

As a KY fan, this is incredibly weird to hear about Tubby Smith.  You consider him a good recruiter, but at KY that was his #1 criticism.  No one here thought he could bring in any big name players.  And if he couldn't do it coming to a perennial powerhouse like KY, how in the world is he bringing them up there to MN?

As for fund-raising, I don't think anyone in KY really cares about that other than possibly the president of UK.  But when it comes to in-game coaching, Tubby was always considered one of the best.  After all, he was the coach of the "Comeback Cats" on his way to the 1998 national championship.  He also was always credited with bringing out the best from the sub-par players that he recruited, and developing great team chemistry.

The only part of your perspective on Tubby that sounds familiar is about team discipline.  There was one year in particular that a bunch of the KY players got in trouble for various things, and people were questioning Tubby's control of his players.

Anyway, I just found your perspective really interesting due to it being so different from mine.  Perhaps Tubby has changed in the last decade, or perhaps one (or both) of us could simply be mistaken.  But either way it's curious.

This year's group of players are all Tubby's recruits, and were regarded by many experts and by Tubby himself to be the best group MN has had in at least 15 years. And for the first half of the season, they played like that was true. But when the same group of guys can go from 8th in the nation (and a rather well-deserved 8th, due to a strong non-conference schedule, and beating a few ranked teams to start the Big Ten season) to barely making the tournament, coaching has got to be an issue. Also, after seemingly every loss, Tubby would point out flaws in individual players as the reasons for the loss in press conferences, deflecting blame from himself for some very poorly coached games. I don't doubt that Tubby was a great coach (which is why I was really excited when he came here). But I think that perhaps his time has come to an end when it comes to coaching. Apparently the experts say we have a decent shot at making the Sweet Sixteen due to some favorable circumstances (UCLAs second-leading scorer has a broken foot, and Florida has had some serious vulnerabilities shown the past few games) and if we do, then there's a chance Tubby keeps his job (if he wants it). But I think most of us expect him to be shown the door after a blowout loss to UCLA, because that's just the way we've been playing.

Oh well... Liberty put up a fight, and had several chances to win the game, but couldn't pull off the early upset. I thought they played pretty well for a team with an overall losing record and 20 losses on the season (well... 21 now).

So, did anybody catch any of the RMU versus Kentucky game? I know it's NIT, but that was incredible.

I agree with what Prof A said. And it's not like I have a professional opinion, just a fan's observations. Our team just hasn't had the same discipline we had through the first half of January. And I'm frustrated because I feel like our team is talented and deep enough to be 2-5 seed.

That Kentucky- Rob Morris game was awesome. Once Lucky Jones got ejected, I didn't think they had a chance anymore. It came down to free throws. I don't think RMU missed one the whole second half. That's neccessary for an upset.

Well, I apologize to anyone who took my advice. Apparently the Gophers decided they wanted to shoot...and shoot well. I haven't seen a more complete effort from my team in many, many years. Ski U Mah!

I'm a Gophers fan, but... now basketball is all people are going to be talking about Monday :(. Had they lost today, they'd have a chance to get it out of their system. Whether they win or lose Sunday, it's all I'm going to hear about Monday.

Maybe I should be more optimistic. Ski-U-Mah.

If you were really a Gopher fan, you'd be talking about basketball with everyone else... >:(
But seriously, if we were able to keep playing the way we did last night, we would be talking about Gopher basketball for awhile. It was quite a show.

Well KY might be sitting home watching both the NIT and the March Madness, but at least my picks are at the top of the standings for tonight.

After all that losing, something had to go right :)

Still have all my final four teams in both brakets I'm doing. Last year I lost two to the first round (Duke, Missouri...), and had all of my final four gone by the sweet sixteen.

Sounds like you're doing well.  If only Pittsburgh was still alive, I could say the same.  I really thought they were going all the way to the Final 4 this year.

May I ask your final four and who you picked to lose to Louisville?

My final 4 was kind of interesting really.  I picked the 8th ranked team (Pittsburg) to come out of the west, and it ended up really being the 9th ranked team (Witchita St).  I picked the 3rd ranked team (Florida) to come out of the South, and it ended up really being the 4th ranked team (Michigan).  I also picked Indiana to come out of the East, so I wasn't really close on that one.

I had Louisville losing to the final 4 representative from the South (Florida I thought, but it did end up being Michigan).  My predicted score was 81-77, and it really ended up being 82-76.
