Title: March Madness (Basketball)
Post by: Warrior_Monk on February 28, 2012, 02:30:14 PM
Would there be any interest in doing brackets?

I won last year, but I forget who commissioned the tournament.  It's been on Yahoo the past several years for Redemption players.  Don't quote me but I think The Guardian was commisssioner (without actually taking the time to go search).

I went ahead and created a bracket. See the OP for the linkage.

Considering how AWESOME UK is this year, I'm particularly looking forward to this March Madness :)

I'll be surprised if they make it to the finals. I'll probably have them in my final four though.

I'm glad you don't like them.  Go ahead and have them going out early.  That way my team and my brackets can both clobber you :)

Final four isn't exactly early...

I'm probably going to have Syracuse going second (depends on who they play) or third round though. No way should they be ranked so high, even if they only have one loss.

I think 6ET is when they're doing selection Sunday on ESPN, so I'd guess around that time.

Well, after many tough choices, I'm finally done with my bracket. Just thought I'd post a reminder to finish yours before 12:15 EST tomorrow.

Would anybody be interested in changing the scoring to a Progressive set? Currently, we have the Yahoo standard, which looks like this:

Round of 64: 1 point
Round of 32: 2 points
Sweet 16: 4 points
Elite 8: 8 points
Final 4: 16 points
Championship: 32 points

Whereas a Progressive scoring set would look like this:

Round of 64: 1 point
Round of 32: 2 points
Sweet 16: 3 points
Elite 8: 4 points
Final 4: 5 points
Championship: 6 points

You can PM me here, or respond on either this thread or the one I started in the group.  A majority vote will change it. Unless I hear a strong disapproval, I'll change it. I like progressive.

I like progressive. It lends more towards total accuracy rather just getting the big games correct.

I like the way it is because, imo, because its seems to be more fun if everybody has a good shot at winning. People who don't follow ncaab consistently (like myself) would probably get destroyed in progressive and they probably will in regular scoring but at least they have a chance. Progressive seems like a better fit in a more competitive bracket pool. Just my thoughts.

EDIT: It is also really late notice and others might not be able to adjust there brackets in time if they aren't on the boards or league every day.

The late notice is the problem. I'll go with a majority vote, but for next year I think I'd prefer progressive.

I don't follow NCAAB, but I do my research for march madness. First year I did this I won simply because I picked the winner, and I just randomly guessed...which is one reason I like progressive. It also allows you to take some risks without being penalized too much.

I will follow the tournament, but I do not participate in these kind of things as a witness to my brother, who is a heavy gambler.

Have fun without me!  ;D

Go UConn!

No Progressive.

It doesn't matter who wins the first round games but it does matter who wins the championship.

This is why I like progressive.  Picking one game (even though more important) isn't as good as picking the entire 1st round correctly.  Personally, I'd like something in between the two like this:

Round 1 - 1 pt
Round 2 - 2 pt
Round 3 - 4 pt
Round 4 - 7 pt
Round 5 - 11 pt
Championship - 16 pt

That way each round is worth more, but the championship is only worth half of the 1st round instead of all of it.

P.S.  I also like scoring systems that reward people picking upsets.

Your bracket looks promising, but you should have had Belmont winning it.

Pretty much all the difficult pairings have gone the other way for me. My bracket with Belmont in the Elite Eight is 13/16 though. Go Bruins!

After a rough start, I'm glad to report that as of the Final Four, I've finally reached the top of the standings.  The 2 things necessary for me to pull off the win are for OH State to win their next game and then lose in the final.  Nothing else matters for my bracket.

Of course for my heart, the only thing that matters is that UK finishes the job this year and goes all the way :)

Mark will lose to me if OH state wins it all.

Now that all my teams are gone, I just want to watch Kentucky burn.  They'll beat Louisville, but there last game should be tough.

I want Ohio State to win, but I think they'll choke, so I'm cheering for Kansas.

Why the hate?  How about a little compassion for a team that hasn't won the championship in over a decade (OH St and KS have both won the championship more recently), and just a few years ago had 2 of the worst seasons in program history.  Our fans are finally able to have a team to be proud of again, and a chance to regain former glory.  What's not to love about that?

Mostly because my sister wants them to win. We have to have some rivalries. All of my favorite and least favorite teams are pretty much picked randomly based on memories I have as a child. UNC and Pitt are my two favorites, but I like Belmont and Vanderbilt because I'm going to be going to school at Belmont. Kentucky, Duke, Notre Dame, and now Syracuse are in my lists of don't like because my sister likes Kentucky, Syracuse was so overrated this year, my Grandpa hates Notre Dame and Duke, and my brother-in-law loves Duke. However, I trust Duke to win. They let me down this year. Another reason to hate them.

...Syracuse was so overrated this year, ...

They lost their best player before the tournament started, but still made the Elite 8. That doesn't sound overrated to me....  ;)

And VCU made the final four last year. Doesn't mean they were underrated. Luck happens.

I would argue that VCU was underrated. If small teams have NBA talent, that is hardly luck.
