Title: Has anyone seen my conference?
Post by: YourMathTeacher on September 20, 2011, 11:00:45 PM
What's with the tsunami of conference jumpers? This was the Longhorns Network's fault?

Do you want the long or short response?

To answer your question though it's simple, the Big XII doesn't have the handle on TV revenue that other conferences do. I welcome all your defecter to the PAC MEGATRON!!!!! (Thank you Tony Reali for that name I will use it forever)

Do you want the long or short response?

Do you mean the 10-team response or the 16-team response?  ;)

The Big 12 collapse was well publicized, but I honestly did not see the Big East collapse coming at all. And I'm a Big East fan! Coach Calhoun talks all smug, so I would guess UConn goes to the ACC, but West Virginia's snub by the ACC and SEC had to hurt. And what about TCU, thinking they made it big by going to the Big East, except that it may not be there when they arrive.  :o

Big East has zero credibility in football though, and that leads to bad revenues for the football teams

But the Big East was a dominant force in basketball, generating millions in television revenue. I am surprised that would not be enough to keep the conference alive overall. I am guessing that there was a threat of eliminating the Big East automatic bid for the BCS. This whole collapse seems to have happened too fast.

Football on it's worst day still generates way more revenue then basketball though

They would if they were in a decent conference

You've obviously never been to Connecticut. Basketball is all that matters... women's and men's. Football is just the "other" sport.

only because you're football program is irrelevant. if they won anything they'd be bigger. Football is a way bigger sport no matter where you go in the us except probably alaska

No need to trash talk the university. You be a fan of your team and I'll be a fan of mine. We don't need to be haters of anyone else's.

This is simply not true. UConn made its fame in basketball, so that will always be where it's heart is, just like football is to Notre Dame, baseball is to Arizona State, and hockey is to Lake Superior State. All other sports are secondary, because the fans of those schools will always have their championship banners to fall back on.

Being that basketball originated not far from there also makes it the "primary" sport in that region.

I was hoping that WVU would join the ACC, so I could see some hurricanes and duke games closer, but It looks like the ACC still needs to bring in 2 more "quality teams". I would say they'll end up with 4 super-mega-monster-conferences in football. If teams don't move, then they'll be left out. It seem college football will be forced into a playoff system in the future, or just take the winners of these super-mega-monster conferences.

A university's board of directors will always follow the money like a newb lawyer chases ambulances.  The trickle-down effect impacts which conference/region/school becomes the hotbed for football/basketball/baseball/etc.

Used to be that there was only one place spoken regarding college basketball -- Indiana!

Hoosier Daddy now??!!

Spoken like a humanistic relativist fan of a losing program (not necessarily referring to UConn...I just disagree with the idea in general, and I must do so by using exaggerating terms to further solidify the facts of my personal opinion ;) ).  I have every right to hate Duke University and the Univ. of Kentucky, and I will likely talk trash (aka point out my team's superb statistics) to those fans when given the opportunity.

Have fun talking, because when your boys come into Rupp Arena this season, UK will be doing the winning :)

As for Duke, I agree with you about having plenty of reasons to hate that team.

Spoken like a humanistic relativist fan of a losing program ...blah, blah, blah....

Actually I was speaking like a Christian who takes the Bible literally, but who's keeping track?

We WILL see why all the experts are in agreement on who the preseason #1 is.  We will see why they are the hands down favorite for the National Title.  AND we will how gracious I will be too you by not sending any PMs.   :P

"Experts" built the Titanic.  Amateurs built the Ark.  We know how that turned out :)

Awww.  Where's the fun in that?  I actually have a lot of respect for UNC.  If it weren't for my good-natured rivalry with you (including PMs), I wouldn't look forward to that game half as much :)

But the amateurs didn't design the ark ;)

Fun fact:  Since the Titanic was lost in 1912, no other ship has been lost due to an iceberg.  8)

The only thing I want to know is which of the non-BCS conference are going to get automatic BCS bowl bids when the Big East and Big XII disolve? Mountain West seems like a logical option considering Boise State, and a few others, but who else? Or will the NCAA wimp out and just turn those in to more wild card slots?

The NCAA will go to a playoff system when this shakes out. FACT. We will get 4 conferences of 16 teams. Each conference champion will enter the 4 team playoff. Those 3 games will be rotated between BCS bowls. The other 3 BCS bowls will be filled by the BCS system.

That is something that I thought would happen as well. 4 16 team conferences and those winners play a 4 team playoff. It probably wouldn't work though. The teams would all dispute that the other winners are coming out of an easier mega-conference. I'd say no human polls until after the first month of games. Then use the current BCS formula to create the "top (insert # of teams here)." Those teams play in the playoffs. Use the other bowl games (That are already pretty much worthless) for the 6-6+ win teams that don't make playoffs. If you are out of the top #, then tough, someone will always complain though.

There are 121 Teams in Division 1 College football, you want to make it so that only 64 of them have any kind of a chance of getting in to BCS Bowl Game? How does this solve the current problem faced by the Boise State's of the world?  ::)
