Windows of Narrow Light

I heard somewhere that a hero with no SA that has a gained abilities doesn't count for WoNL.  Is this true?  Also, does a hero with no SA carrying a weapon with a SA still count as having no SA?

Windows of Narrow Light
Type: Artifact • Brigade: None • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: Protect your Heroes with no special ability from capture, conversion and removal from the game. • Identifiers: OT, Temple Item • Verse: I Kings 6:4 • Availability: Promotional cards (2008 Local Tournament)

A Gained ability is a special ability. So a gathered hero doesn't qualify for WoNL.

A weapon ability is not a character's SA, so King Saul with a weapon still qualifies for WoNL.

Quote from: REG>Instant Abilities>Set Aside
The special ability gained in set-aside is only taken away when a character is removed from the game, returned to hand, or placed in a draw or discard pile.

The special ability gained in set-aside cannot be interrupted, prevented or negated when the character enters the Field of Battle.

Gained abilities from set-aside are explained here as SA's. I don't see how any other gained ability would be different.

If the card said "Heroes with no special ability written on the card" Then I would say gained SA's could work with Windows as well.

Unfortinately, it does not.  :(

Just to clarify, for the sake of any new players reading this thread:

Gained special abilities (like from Gathering of Angels) are special abilities.

Gained numerical abilities (*/*) (like from Prayer and Fasting) are not special abilities.

In that case, what are the conditions for having a special ability? It may seem obvious, but I always thought that having a special ability meant that there were words physically printed over the card image (that were not intended to be the card title).

This really should be defined in the REG or rulebook if it is not already, and if it is, could someone direct me to where? If it is not defined, then I might have to argue that a character with a negated SA should be considered to have no SA.

Does that mean that I can't use a character that has been set aside with Passover Preparations with Windows? :(

Passover Preparations

Type: Hero Enh. • Brigade: Red • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: Set aside a Hero that has no special ability for four turns. Upon return enhancements played on Hero may not be interrupted, prevented, or negated.

Correct. That hero then gains an ability, and is no longer protected by Windows. They could try macs instead, but idk how much that'll do for them.  :D
