question already says it: Will my Chariot of Fire work after battle if opponent already has HZR out?

No because you are searching your discard pile for heroes to be returned to your deck.

Thanx - already thought that it won't work unfortunately.

Then I assume also Barnabas (EC) and similar characters / cards will also not work in this part, right?

Any kind of search or exchange ability will not work unless you negate HSR.
