Rip a card in half?? Haman's plot

I just wonder why would Cactus game design would ask a player to rip a card in half?  It just does seem odd to me ???.

I do not think I have seen any other card game that would want you to rip a card in half?? :-\

It has a great SA with discarding 3 characters of choice... but

if someone is at a tournament  and used plot , why not let the tournament host or someone just keep the 1 card from the player until the tournament is over or something and then give it back? so the player does not use it again?    or

Why not remove it from the game after battle instead? if playing with it in a non- tournament

I mean the card is worth $5 on TLG and may take opening , who knows how many booster packs to find it again.

If you have any ideas or thoughts please share and post them here

thanks

for some historical background, the card used to be worth about 1.00 when it came out. It was raised to 3.00 around 2006-2008 (when Brown was the dominant defense), and has been adjusting ever since. A lot of the problem is people are not opening Patriarchs packs in the same frequency as in the past. Also, Haman's plot seems to be one of those cards that just does not appear in many booster drafts (unless people take them to stockpile).

The desire to not rip the card is one of the reasons Haman's Gallows was printed. Fun games you can just remove HP from the deck without ripping it, but at real sanctioned tournaments the card must be ripped...

And if I'm not mistaken there are a few other cards that needed to be altered in order to work...

The reason you have to tear it is because once it is played, you can discard any three characters in play or set aside that you want that aren't protected and the discard can't be stopped (just insteaded). Now, there are plenty of protect/instead cards now so plot has lost some of it's umph, but when plot was first printed, there wasn't any instead cards (correct me if I'm wrong), and protection from discard was really limited to Altar of Incense or similar cards that weren't blanket protectors.

With the fact that the card can't be stopped once played and back when printed there weren't nearly as many options for mitigating the damage it could do, tearing it was deemed to be an appropriate cost to have to pay; especially considering that opening patriarchs packs was done much more often as they had some of the best cards at the time of their printing. Recently (relatively), Cactus printed of Haman's Gallows to try to make up for the fact that pot has lost a fair amount of its bite with the number of instead/protect cards floating around, but that still costs you a card slot. TechnoEthicist mentioned in home/house games just playing it as a "remove this card from game after..." card, it's what my group does. Saves cards and money, and Plot doesn't pop up much in our games, anyway.

Such cards do exist, and are ripped in other card games.  Chaos Confetti is one such example, and though that's not in the 'standard' version of that card game, it does get played at tournaments.

But Praeceps has the point, it had an ability that was a CBN discard when those didn't exist, it discarded any alignment when those didn't exist, and it discarded three when those didn't exist.  It is still very powerful, but back then, it was nigh unstoppable.

If people need these, there are always players (like me) who have just been collecting copies all this time and have extras to spare ;)

Actually Chaos Confetti is "unglued" in MTG and is just meant for kicks and giggles (can't be played in any game or tournament)
