Alright, say my opponent has one redeemed soul and I have none. I attack with Women at the well, they block with some EC, doesn't really matter who, I play ambush the city and rescue a soul. When it goes back to a battle challenge, I play grapes. Do I get to make ANOTHER rescue attempt??

Ongoing Abilities > Miscellaneous > Special Conditions

• If a battle challenge “becomes” a rescue attempt when the rescue attempt is being prevented by another card, continue to treat it as a battle challenge (e.g., False Dreams or Ambush the City).

• Multiple The Long Day cards may be used in the same battle. “Second” means the same as additional, similar as is the case for banding cards. If a rescue attempt is successful on a turn, holder may not make any more rescues on that turn.

A better question:

What happens if the Ambush rescue fails, then the Battle Challenge fails, and Grapes is then played? Is the "rescue" still being "prevented" by Ambush the City (according to the REG, mind you - AtC does not actually say "prevent")? Or, does the "prevent" only apply to the next battle, with Grapes then starting a new battle that could be a Rescue Attempt?

It's possible to make several failed rescue attempts in one turn but only one successful rescue attempt.

If you don't play Grapes during a rescue attempt then you're not the current rescuer. If you're not the current rescuer then you don't get to begin a new battle. If you do play Grapes during your rescue attempt then you won't have a Hero left to rescue a LS so your rescue attempt will fail.

Well that I did not know. So playing Grapes of Wrath during a Battle Challenge will never allow you to make a second battle, because you are not the rescuer, you're just the challenger.
