Title: Voluntary Discarding
Post by: Red Warrior on August 22, 2011, 11:28:55 PM
Just to clarify, a player may not opt to discard cards from his hand during the discard phase if they have 8 or less cards in hand, correct?

"After you have completed all the actions you choose, you must reduce the cards in your hand to eight or less. If you have eight or fewer cards in your hand, then you should announce that you are finished. If you have more than eight cards in your hand, then you should reduce the cards in your hand down to eight or fewer by discarding cards from your hand face up on the top of your discard pile." - Rulebook, per REG

Eight or less can be any number from 8 to 0. You do not have to end the battle phase over 8 in order to Discard, either.

That sounds reasonable Pol. No one in our playgroup had ever run Zebulun so I'd never really had to think about it before, lol.

Yes, there can be many reasons for wanting to discard even when you're below nine, such as creating the engine Isaiah needs to draw, getting the Demon you want to block with after using Seven Sons of Sceva, or getting King Jereboam I dead enough for King Nadab to work.

Let me understand this properly: you can discard cards during battle phase voluntarily?

No. Pol is only talking about the Discard Phase, which follows directly after the Battle Phase. Some people think you can't DC if you have 8 (or less) cards in your hand. This is not true.

That makes a little more sense

I dont agree with this ruling because I feel like cards like Zebulan are broken enough and dont need any help. There should have to be an outlet for breaking cards like Pol explained above. I Am Holy, ect.

But alas...

Just for clarification, voluntary discarding from hand during the Discard Phase has different rules than voluntary discarding from territory. You cannot choose to discard a hero from your territory, for example, just because you wish you hadn't put him there.

I'm getting confused here, so can you voluntarily discard cards from your hand if you have 8 or less?

Since when did YMT become forum jester? LOL  :rollin:

wow, this changes things.  So on your discard phase you can discard cards on purpose as not to get punished by 7 Years of Famine for example?

Sure...but if you're discarding cards from hand to avoid getting punished by 7yoP...why not just wait to discard a card from hand from 7yoP, and only discard one, instead of possibly 2 or more?

you're right, I just used the first example I could think of.

Most common scenario is Zebulun.

Also, thought it was worth a mention: Thanks to new rulings, you can discard a card, place a hero down, place a fortress, place another hero, etc.  Discarding from hand is not the last thing one does in a turn.

During a battle can you place characters/Artifacts/Fortresses from your hand into your territory? I assume not, but want clarification.

Nope. You can do it during Prep and Discard.
