Vengeance of Eternal Fire

VoEF:  Banish an evil character, all evil cards in all discard piles, a single-brigade site and an evil fortress in play or a set-aside area.

So, there are 4 things that happen when you play this card. Does that mean that ALL 4 things MUST happen, or the card does not work at all?

Example: what if there are no evil fortresses in play, does that mean you CAN'T play the card, and NONE of the other (3) things will happen?

Or, will the other three things happen, and the fourth just doesn't happen, because it can't.

ALSO, when you play this card,  I am assuming that if your opponent does not have any of those target cards, then YOUR OWN CARDS become targets, CORRECT?

Thank you,

Eric

For cards with mandatory abilities that are not also cost-benefit abilities, you do as much as you can.  If there are no single-brigade sites in play, for example, you simply don't banish one.

JM:

That makes a HUGE difference. Are you sure about this?

(Can we get an elder to weigh in?)

Also, what about when the site is YOURS, not your opponent's, does that mean you have to banish your own?

Thanks,
ELM

Eric, JMHartz is correct.  Whenever a card mandates something (whenever the word "may" isn't used) then the ability MUST go through as much as can be done.  So if the only evil fortress in play/set-aside is your own then it must be banished.  If there is no evil fortress in play then that part of the ability will not complete.  The same goes for the other targets of VoEF.

OK,

What about TRUMPET BLAST?

"Discard an evil fortress or occupied site from play to discard all evil characters in battle."

What if there is no fortress or site in play? Can I still "discard all evil characters in battle?"

Thanks,

E

since it says "to" you have to meet the first condition to get the second

another card which is similar to this is samuel(roa) if you can't search out david or saul you don't get the draw

there are other cards which say only and where you can do as much as you can in some cases

Are you sure about this?

I am quite sure   ;)

A similar example is Zeal for the Lord (back when Teal was more popular), which appeared from time to time on the Rulings board.  Check out one of those ruling threads here.

OK,

"Discard an evil fortress or occupied site from play to discard all evil characters in battle."

What if there is no fortress or site in play? Can I still "discard all evil characters in battle?"

The key word in TBlast's ability is "...to...".  This almost always means a cost-benefit ability.  You don't get the benefit (in this case, discard all ECs in battle) unless you pay the cost (discard an evil fort or occupied site).

Rulings from JMHartz and RedemptionAggie carry a lot of weight. The elders even talk things over with them sometimes.  8)

Thank you for bringing up Zeal for the Lord...

I have had some trouble with that card in the past.

"Interrupt the battle and discard two evil characters of different brigades."

What if there is only ONE evil character in play?

Can you still discard him?

What if there are two, but both with the same brigade, can you only discard one?

Or, in both of the above cases, does the effect work at all?

Thanks.

If there is one, you can discard it.

If there is two of the same brigade you can choose one to discard.
Fortress Alstad
Have you checked the REG?
Have you looked it up in ORCID?
