Understanding Sites

The Field of Play diagram seems to show a pile of territories face down and one face-up on top (like artifacts). Is this the proper way to understand territories (that only one can be "active" in play, whatever that means, besides those containing a LS)?

Also, the rulebook mentions a Hero bringing a site with them into battle. How does this work (i.e. do I just say "I declare this rescue attempt and place this territory with my Hero" and then put a territory into the Field of Battle from anywhere, or only from my pile, or only an "active" one, if they work that way)?

Sites are placed in a site pile which is in territory and can be used to gain access into an opponents occupied site. Sites cannot be placed from hand into battle.

Occupied sites are placed in the Land of Bondage and cannot be used to gain access to opponents sites.

Site Access
Last Updated: 10/10/2012
Released: 7/26/2011
General Description
A site access ability causes a Hero to have access to a site that it would not normally have.
How to Play
If an ability gives access to one or more sites, the defender selects which site will be accessed. However, a site holding a Lost
Soul that the character cannot access may not be selected.
Site access abilities are dynamic in that particular sites that are accessible can change over the course of the battle. An“access
to all sites” ability dynamically includes unoccupied sites that become occupied after the beginning of battle. An “access to any
site” ability loses access to a site initially chosen when it ceases to hold a Lost Soul.
A site access ability is ongoing. Site access abilities target the Heroes that gain access.
Clarifications
 Because site access abilities are dynamic and only one Lost Soul can be rescued in each battle, there is no functional
difference between gaining access to “any” (one) site and gaining access to “all” (all) sites.

The Field of Play diagram seems to show a pile of territories sites face down and one face-up on top (like artifacts). Is this the proper way to understand territories sites (that only one can be "active" in play, whatever that means, besides those containing a LS)?
Sites are all active and face up.
Also, the rulebook mentions a Hero bringing a site with them into battle. How does this work (i.e. do I just say "I declare this rescue attempt and place this territory site with my Hero" and then put a territory site into the Field of Battle from anywhere, or only from my pile, or only an "active" one, if they work that way) territory?

thanks a lot. That clears things up. Thanks also for the correction on terminology.

by the way, don't think the rule book mentions either way: Are Occupied Sites discarded when the Lost Soul in them is Redeemed (or otherwise leaves the Land of Bondage or Site)?

Also, some cards make reference to evil cards "guarding" a site. What does that mean?

If a LS is redeemed from a site, then the site just stays in your territory empty until you put another LS in it.

As for cards "guarding" a site, there are some old cards that no one really uses that allow you to put an EC or EE on a site face up.  Then if someone tries to rescue that LS in the site, you can either add the EC to battle, or else it increases the size of your blockers, or something like that.

However, like I said no one really uses those cards.  There is a LS that allows you to put an EC face-down on the site and add it to battle later.  That one gets used sometimes, but the face-down EC is out of play and therefore is not targeted by those cards like Dragon Raid.

To further clarify, a site is placed in the Land of Bondage where it is occupied. If the Lost Soul is taken out in any way then the site leaves the Land of Bondage and goes back to the site pile.
