Title: Twice Afflicted
Post by: DaClock on December 02, 2008, 01:19:12 AM
The Terrifying Beast bands to Emperor Vitellius who has Namaan's Chariots and Horses. I draw two cards and play Twice Afflicted. Does the ability take effect?

More specifically, if there is more than one character in battle and an enhancement states "if played on X" and there is an X in battle, does the enhancement always take effect?

Twice Afflicted
Type: Evil Enh. • Brigade: Grey • Ability: 2 / 4 • Class: None • Special Ability: If used by a demon, search discard pile for a gray brigade enhancement and play it. Prevent all special abilities that return cards to a player's hand.

The Terrifying Beast
Type: Evil Char. • Brigade: Orange/Gray • Ability: 11 / 12 • Class: None • Special Ability: Discard a Greek. Immune to blue brigade. May band to a Roman Emperor.

Emperor Vitellius
Type: Evil Char. • Brigade: Gray • Ability: 10 / 1 • Class: Warrior • Special Ability: You may draw X cards. Cannot be negated by a good card. • Attributes: NT Roman Emperor, Fought Earthly Battle, X=number of good brigades opponent has in play.

Namaan's Chariots and Horses
Type: Evil Enh. • Brigade: Grey • Ability: 2 / 2 • Class: Weapon • Special Ability: Interrupt the battle and draw two cards. If used by a unique character, you may play the next Enhancement.

Namaan's Chariot and Horses says "you may play the next Enhancement", without specifying that you must play that enhancement on the character holding Namaan's C&H. So I would think that you could play Twice Afflicted on the Terrifying Beast and have it work, but I'm not absolutely sure.

So "played on X" and "have X in battle" are functionally the same?

Not really.

No.  This combo works because you have the choice to play the next enhancement on either character and if you pick The Terrifying Beast then the condition of being used by a demon is met.  Additionally, you could search for Heavy Taxes and then play that on the Emperor to meet that condition.  Enhancements do not just float in battle; every time they are played they have to be played on a specific valid character chosen at the time they are played.  If you choose to play Twice Afflicted on the Emperor then the ability will not work.

That makes me miss the good old days when you could mix and match Enhancements on any brigade you had in the current battle.  :)
