1. I know that people were playing that you can put them in and out before or after your battle phase at Nationals. However, when I read your question, I realized I'm not sure if that's right or not, since I thought there was a ruling that it can be either UNLESS it specifies a certain way to add or remove characters, like Tower of Thebez does. So for this I am not sure... I do know that you may only return one character to your territory when you are attacked.

That is not the same as asking a judge and receiving an inaccurate ruling.
2. Hero abilities are no longer negated. However, previously negated abilities do not try again to activate. If they were negated when they tried to activate, they will not activate later. At least, that's my understanding of a thread from a couple months ago. So this would allow you to leave your guy in there to negate the original attacker's ability, but still defend with him later.3. Yes, if it's used by a Disciple.
