The Name of the Lord (AW)
Type: Fortress • Brigade: None • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: Set this fortress aside. If you have initiative, you may interrupt the battle and place your Hero on this fortress. Hero is protected from effect. Each time you rescue a Lost Soul, return one Hero to your territory. This fortress is protected from discard. • Play As: If you have initiative, you may interrupt the battle and place your Hero in this fortress. Hero is protected from effect. Each time you rescue a Lost Soul, return one Hero to your territory. This fortress is protected from discard. The Name of the Lord may hold any number of Heroes. • Identifiers: Play to set-aside area. • Verse: Proverbs 18:10 • Availability: Angel Wars booster packs (Ultra Rare)

How does the "Hero is protected from effect." part work?  Are they protected from everything(Good and Evil) that would "affect" them?  Does this mean they are protected from being returned to their owners territory?  Also how long does the protection last?

This is the way Lackey gave it to me. All hail the power of Lackey!

"Protected from effect" means, as far as I know, "cannot be targeted by any card of any alignment". The only way to "affect" a Hero inside one of those Fortresses is to discard/shuffle/negate the Fortress.

I agree that TNotL could use an updated Play As that clarifies that Heroes are not protected from the rest of it's ability (else it would be essentially useless). However, it does seem clear that the Heroes in TNotL are only protected inside the Fortress, or at the very least, for the rest of the phase in which they are released (which would always be Battle Resolution, since the release is a triggered ability that activates when you rescue an LS, and all other methods of release would have to interrupt/negate the Fortress).

If they are "protected from effect" while inside the fortress, then are they not shuffled by ANB when the fortress is?

Why would the protection end at the end of the phase?  I see how that would happen with Goshen/KotW (as they are only protected in fortress), but TNotL doesn't give an ending time.

Placed cards (i.e. cards placed in a fortress) follow the card they're placed on.

Only at Prof U's tournaments... ::)

All kidding aside, it was ruled that the game rule that cards placed on or in other cards follow their hosts overrules the protection of KotW, Goshen, etc.

"Protected from effect" means, as far as I know, "cannot be targeted by any card of any alignment". The only way to "affect" a Hero inside one of those Fortresses is to discard/shuffle/negate the Fortress.

Maybe it is unclear, but I've always read "Hero is protected from effect" as "Hero in the Fortress is protected from effect". That was clearly the intent, as it would be a tad overpowered, and most likely game breaking, if a Hero could become indefinitely protected from all effects.

I agree, as that was probably the intent, but as we know from Split Altar, intent doesn't always translate into what the card does.

But as we also know from pretty much every other example, errata to make cards less powerful isn't a big deal.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

Or I could SoG/NJ some Lost Souls in any phase and get two characters out. If it really does last to the end of the phase, that would be an interesting combo. RA with a hero, SoG/NJ some LSs and get two heroes protected from everything back, band them into battle with any banding enhancement, ??????, profit!

How do you band them in if they're protected from everything?

I'll give you that. My point was more to show that battle resolution is not the only time you could get a hero out of NotL, the banding was just frosting on the cake (a cake which seems to be a lie).

I think if you read the card literally then technically the heros would indefinitely be protected from all effect.  But I don't think this would be game breaking because if you are reading it that literally then as has been mentioned, you also have to say that the hero is also protected from the fortress and can never be released.

So maybe it should be worded to only protect in the fortress but not protect from the fortress.  I think technically that would be errata but since that is how most people play it anyway then maybe play as is fine.

If the protection lasts until the end of the phase, then you start a rescue attempt, play SoG, then play something like Grapes or Ambush the City to start a new rescue with your untouchable hero.

Grapes got errata so stuff like that wouldn't work.  :)

That actually would work as described. But considering it can only be done once and only if you have the fewest souls after playing SoG/NJ and you haven't played Grapes yet, it wouldn't be all that beneficial to speed. Not broken imo if that's the way the SA ends up being interpreted.
