The ability only applies to Evil Characters converted while Faithful Leaders are active. You can rescue with him and then use Holy Grail to take advantage of the conversion, but it won't apply retroactively to characters converted prior to activating the ability.

Clay brigade is added in addition to any other brigade the character might receive from the conversion.

To clarify, you can use Holy Grail anytime during the battle phase but only on an Evil Character in a territory.

In the past it's been combo'd with The Woman at the Well and Philistine Outpost to convert the human EC put in territory before they can block.
