Title: The Darkness
Post by: theselfevident on September 02, 2011, 08:41:53 AM
The Darkness (AW)

Type: Fortress • Brigade: None • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: Place an Evil Character from hand face down here. If an opponent begins a rescue attempt and chooses a blocker (or is unblocked), you may reveal this evil character. Blocking player may add it to the battle. Otherwise return it face down.

If you block, and your evil character is removed from the battle, could the rescue attempt then be considered unblocked? Or is the ability only active at the beginning of the rescue attempt as it seems to read? (Just making sure since there are so many rulings that change what cards say =))

I guess what I'm getting at is:
1. Define unblocked for me
2. How does it apply to this card

This is used almost exclusively for multiplayer games. If one of your opponents makes a rescue attempt against someone else, and it looks like they don't have a block, you can take your evil character out of The Darkness and say, "yo bro, choose Pikachu, he's the bestest!" And they then have the option of blocking with Pikachu instead of with Charmander, who they probably had in hand.

To answer your original question, yes, you can.

Yes you can...
a. Add a character to the battle if you evil characters are removed from battle and the RA is unblocked?
b. Only add the character to the battle at the beggining of the battle if the RA is unblocked?

I'm pretty sure just B.

I have always heard that it was B as well.  If it is otherwise, I would be real interested to know that.

tse,  it is B.  I will be quite surprised if an elder says A.

My reasoning:  with A, the Good guy was blocked (and therefore not "unblocked") because an EC was once in battle attempting to stop the hero.  Just because the hero won the battle in some way doesn't mean that he was never blocked.

So my definition of "unblocked" is.....  a hero who has not been blocked.

Actually, the definition of "is unblocked" is "is not currently faced with a blocker". However, the key phrase on The Darkness is "If an opponent begins a rescue attempt". So you can only use The Darkness immediately following the entrance into battle of the Hero and all abilities associated with that hero or triggered by the battle beginning. If you choose not to use the Darkness then, you cannot use it later.

A card that plays like it reads  ;)
