Battle Phase Timing

When exactly does the Battle Phase begin? Is it just a declared thing that happens prior to a hero (or EC with taunt) beginning a battle, or does the act of initiating a battle shift the turn into the Battle Phase?

According to the rulebook, the battle phase is begun by placing a character into battle. That character is always a Hero except in the extremely rare instance that you're taunting with Goliath.
Have you visited the Land of Redemption today?

It sounds like they don't from the way I read it.

You cant begin to put a character into battle in the preparation phase.

I say battle phase begins the second you start to move a card into battle. There needs to be at least a split second of time between battle phase starting, and you pushing a character into battle.

My question is, why does it matter?

My question is, why does it matter?

A combo that someone else does not want revealed. That's all I'll say to that.

Alright, this should help a bit, as timing is very important here.

Which of the following animations is correct?

Scenario #1

Scenario #2

Now comes the fun part...

What part of the REG makes you feel it is Option 2? I ask because this subject is quite fuzzy in the REG, and any proof pointing to either side would help a lot.

Well you can be coy all you like, but in the event that it doesn't matter for any other reason, then my guess is that whatever this secret combo is will probably affect what the ruling will be.

Therefore, if you want to get an accurate ruling that will hold up in a high level tournament when someone tries to use this secret combo, then I suggest that you actually say what the combo is (or at least PM it to myself or some other elders).

If this were my combo, I would have said it. However, someone else requested that I keep it quiet, so I did.

Should send it to me too Matt. If anybody besides Lambo and RR are likely to find a hole in your combo it's me.

Late to the party (but still wearing my hat), I'd say that it's #1, it begins with the pushing of a hero.

After a good conversation over PM last night with Lambo and CG25, I have decided that I think that the battle phase begins when the hero is actually IN battle and the player states that they are making a rescue attempt or battle challenge.

Therefore, the hero is NOT in territory when the phase changes to "battle phase", and I would say that scenario #2 is more accurate.

A player can start to push a hero in battle, but then notice that they forgot to switch their Wanderer LS for their opponent's 2-liner.  If they haven't let go of their hero and stated that it is a RA or BC, then I would let them move their hero back to their territory and switch LSs (thus it was still prep phase).  I would also allow them to switch artifacts (as long as they hadn't used the last one) or to switch heroes that they were attacking with.  All of these things indicate that it is still actually prep phase while all this is happening.

On the other hand, if they have left their hero in the field of battle and told me that they are making a RA or BC, and then notice something then I would say it would be too late to change things.  Therefore, it seems to me that this is the point when the actual battle phase starts.

I'm no Elder, but I agree with Prof Underwood. That's how I've always understood it, played it, and seen it played.

Here's hoping RDT agrees so we have a ruling, haha.

I just now got a chance to read through the PM exchange that I was CC'ed on. I pretty much agree with Prof U's position.

The only reservation that I have is in regards to Type 2, where heroes like 'Seeker of the Lost' and 'Woman at the Well' don't work as soul generators for a current rescue because the declaration of which soul you're going for happens first.

Can they now? I don't play Type 2 so I don't know when rescuer's choice actually triggers.

It would seem then that the battle phase begins when a player declares whether it is a RA or BC, but before the SA of the hero activates.

Therefore, in T2 if you attack with WatW and there are no LSs in play, then you have to declare it a BC because there is nothing to take at that time (before the SA activates and pulls one out).  Would this work?

That is my understanding of how declaring a RA or BC has worked for many years. In Type 2 I can push Claudia into battle and declare a RA on a lost soul that is in a red site. Then I complete Claudia's ability and continue with the battle. If I gain access to the site I can rescue the soul. However, if I do not gain access, I cannot rescue the lost soul.

However, the rulebook states something contrary to what Mark suggests and contrary to how I have understood it to be played. Help anyone?

Quote
"You begin a rescue attempt or battle challenge by placing a Hero in the Field of Battle. The Hero can be played from your hand or your territory. Some Heroes have a special ability printed over the picture on the card. This special ability does not become active until the Hero enters battle. Once the Hero enters battle, the special ability is activated simultaneously. The instructions on the card must be applied at that moment. If the special ability includes the word “may,” you can choose to activate the special ability or skip it for that battle. Once the Hero has entered battle and special ability completed, he has begun the battle. At this point, declare your intentions to make a rescue attempt or battle challenge."
