Can I discard cannan and target somebody who is protected from capture, to capture an opponents hero?

Canaan (RA2)
Type: Site • Brigade: Purple • Ability: None • Class: None • Special Ability: Protect Canaanites in territory from conversion. You may discard this Site and give an opponent a black Canaanite to capture a Hero in that territory. • Identifiers: None • Verse: Leviticus 18:3 • Availability: Rock of Ages Extended booster packs (None)
What? You must discard Canaan and you must give an opponent a black Canaanite. If you do both of those, you may capture a Hero in your opponent's territory. So it doesn't matter if the black Canaanite you give your opponent is protected from capture because that character isn't a Hero and isn't even possibly being targeted for capture anyway...

Oh! I misread that. What is the caananite being targeted for?

A "Give" ability, which I think is defined in the "Take" section of the REG. It allows you to put your character in your opponent's territory and make your opponent control it.

But if you try to use Gibeonite Curse and all your evil characters are protected from capture, then you still remove a dom from opponent's discard if you can, but you can't search his deck, because you didn't pay the full cost, which included capturing your Canaanite (not attempting to target him for capture).
Also, you can't try to target a character that is protected. If you have a black Canaanite that is not protected from capture, you must target him, not one that is protected.
