Can something that targets artifacts target a random face-down artifact?  Or do you need something that targets the artifact pile?

There would need to be an ability that specifically targets the art pile.

I believe something that targets all artifacts works too.

I was always told on the forum that the ability would have to specifically target inactive artifacts or the art pile.  I looked in the REG for any further clarification but didn't find anything that specifically addresses this question.

I might be a little off on specifics, however the specific targeting of the artifact pile is how it would have been ruled prior to a change regarding cards in the artifact pile being in play.

I think the only place you will see this in the REG is under location, which lists the artifact pile as in play.

Previously, only activated artifacts would have been targetable.

A clear definition of this topic being added to the upcoming REG update would be great.

What does that look like to you?

This sentence from the Face Down entry in the glossary is perfectly clear to me.

Quote
Face down cards are only targetable by abilities that specify they can target face down cards or inactive Artifacts, or cards that can target any or all cards in a location.

I'm not sure it's clear that that includes referencing cards by type, as opposed to simply as "cards".

I wanted to revisit this post and confirm if there's been any official ruling on the issue whether or not face-down artifacts are targetable outside of an ability that specifies they can be, specifically the wording in the bolded portion below.

The bolded wording is a bit off, but the official ruling is that face down cards are targetable by targeting face down cards, inactive Arts, or all cards of the face down card's type in a location.

The non-specific targeting can be specific to the type (Split Altar's "all Artifacts") or more general but still including all cards of that type (ANB's "all cards").
