Stalks of Flax

I recently put Stalks of Flax in a deck, and I was wondering, if I exchange a unique character, say David with an opponent's character (it doesn't really matter who) and then I put down another David and he stays around until Stalks of Flax is done, what happens when my David attempts to return to my territory?

Stalks of Flax (TP)
Type: Artifact • Special Ability: On activation, discard this card to exchange two O.T. human Heroes in your territory with two Heroes in an opponent's territory for two turns.

To expand upon that, I believe the ruling is that if you are given a choice (such as a band or capture ability) you are not allowed to create a situation where you control 2 or more of a unique character, but if the ability is mandatory (like Stalks) then you end up with both and must choose one to discard.

Actually, add to battle abilities are the only restriction. So you can't band or choose the blocker to control or force your opponent to control multiple copies of a unique character. Anything else that causes that like capture or exchange is allowed, you just have to discard one.

What about placing them into territory from hand?

He returns to your territory where you decide which copy to keep and which to discard.

That's what I thought, just wanted to make sure.
