Heroes don't fight along side Evil Characters and vice versa. The mass banding would only happen for one side of the battle.

Moses and emperor Nero both negate everything. Red dragon is the same way... I think John negates everything... Either way though, if you want some stand alones; they don't even need to match the brigade you use, merely because you can't play anything with them. Red dragon doesn't necessarily need crimson, Nero doesn't necessarily need gray (evil), etc. they just need themselves.
But I thought there where some evil characters that negate everything??
Here's an example of how one might effectively use a side battle. You rescue with a green Hero and play Sword of the Lord to create a battle between two Evil Characters. You choose Greek Philosophers and Goliath (L) to fight one another. You control the Philosophers. Since you're losing you have initiative. You play Abom which goes to your opponent's territory. You still have initiative and play Wrath of Satan to discard all Heroes. Now your opponent will not be able to negate the side battle because your Hero is dead. Since you still have initiative you could take out your opponent's entire defense by using Babel to band all their Evil Characters and your Women of Thebez or Philistine wearing Chariot and Horses, giving you a chance to play Joseph before Pharaoh and removing everyone from the game. Since your opponent isn't likely playing black they don't have any way to negate all of what you just did.
