Title: Side Battles
Post by: theselfevident on August 26, 2011, 09:52:37 AM
Couple ?s:
Scenario: I use Cup of Wrath to force any two evil characters to fight.
Can I:
1. Just force my own evil characters to battle without allowing my opponent to be involved in that side battle?
2. If so lets say I use Haman's Plot, can I discard the evil character/characters blocking my hero in the initial battle?
3. If so, once the side battle is resolved, can my opponent negate/interupt any of the cards I've played?

Also, do cards like Cup of Wrath only target evil characters in play or can you use evil characters from your hand?

1. Yes, you can make two of your own ECs fight each other, but if you do, you have to choose one for your opponent to control. (Psst, give him the higher numbered one.)
2. Yes.
3. Your opponent gets a chance to negate the side battle, and if he does, everything played in the side battle is indirectly negated. However, Haman's Plot in particular is CBN, so there's nothing he can do if you play that in the side battle to discard his main character.

Am I to understand: The discard does not happen till after the resolution of the initial battle?

Follow up question:
Can you select their evil character in the initial battle, to fight one of your own characters and consequently do you get to choose which character each player controls?

My understanding is that if you choose your opponent's character in an initial battle to send into a side battle, that you HAVE to let your opponent control that character in the side battle (except for situations where your opponent has multiple characters in the initial battle and you make one of them fight another of them, in which case you would of course have to control one of them).

Follow up questions:

Lets say I have besieged activated and I use Cup of Wrath. I band two evil characters together in the side battle against a 3rd evil character, do I get to take down a fortress as there are 3 evil characters in battle?

Um, no.... Special abilities are carried out as soon as the ability activates (with the exception that removal from battle (capture, discard, remove from game, etc.) generally waits to see if the opponent is going to interrupt/negate it). Haman's Plot would discard all 3 characters as soon as you finished targeting them.

but they could still use an enhancement to interupt/negate cup of wrath in the initial battle even if they are discarded by haman's plot?

Nope. If Haman's Plot was able to be interrupted, then yes, but since it CBN, then anything that it targets is discarded immediately and is unable to play anything.

Scenario:
I play cup of wrath. I have Besieged activated. I select my Gomer to fight Covenant Breakers. I band Gomer to Haman (promo) I set 3 of my opponents hero's aside, and discard one of their OT Fortresses, then play Haman's plot and discard whatever evil Characters (up to 3) in the initial battle. The side battle ends, a huge potential of a rescued lost soul, and there's no consequence to me other than ripping my Haman's Plot?

That's correct. You just have to hope that your opponent doesn't have Pot of Manna active. ::)

I haven't seen anyone play pot of manna. Is it very common at nationals?

Well in that case that seems like a decent combo...

Lies. I totally had it at Regioanls 3 years ago. I put it in Zerubbabel's Temple - Back when it was legal to do so. I don't know if I did it against you, but I've played it at tournaments for sure.

Side-battles are very, very good. My Ezekiel deck has Visions, Sword of the Lord, and Cup of Wrath. If you were to want side-battles to truly get out of control, you could splash in Samuel with Sword against Sword and Green David with Sing and Praises in Musician's Chamber.

Someone Nehustioned my Pot of Manna 2 years ago at Nationals in a type 2 - 2player game. It was epic.
