Hello, if you use a card that lets you set aside a character do set it aside immediately or do you wait until the preparation phase? Thank you for your replies.

Set aside cards immediately set the character(s) aside. They can only be played on a hero of matching brigade during the preparation, battle, or discard phase.

So does that mean you set aside the charecter in battle immediately Ending in an unsuccessful rescue attempt? Or does it mean that you set aside a charecter outside the battle immediately?

That depends on what it says. If it says "Set aside hero" or "Set aside all human heroes", then yes, it'd essentially end the battle immediately unsuccessfully (so long as you're rescuing with a lone hero/human heroes). If it says "Set aside a hero" then you can set aside a hero not in battle.

Ok now I think I understand. The set aside a card portion of the preparation phase is for enhancements. I thought that enhancements were only used in battle but there are exceptions. Thanks.

Another exception is a heal card, which can be used anytime a character is discarded (as long as there's a guy of matching brigade to play it on).

Can you use a set-aside as a means of escape from discard, capture, etc? Say your opponent played a capture card on his EC, could you play a set aside on your hero and get off free, or would you have to interrupt the battle first?

intterupt + set aside would work. Example: Nebbuchadnezzars Pride.

You have to interrupt first.
