I think the most recent default is that you have to discard it immediately after it has been used.

That is how I've been playing it, but my opponent disagreed. It made no difference in our game, but I figured it would be nice to know for sure.

It is discarded after the second use is complete, on your following prep phase. It is not discarded upon the second activation.

Limited-use artifacts are discarded after their last use. The last use of BS ends on the prep phase following its second activation.
