Same Unique Character in Different Battles

I know we have a rule that the same unique character cannot be used on both sides of the battle (for example an opponent cannot block my rescue with Hero King Abijam with his Evil Character King Abijam.

If a new battle is started, via Ambush the City or a side battle card, can player A use a unique character in the new battle that player B used in the first battle?

Example: I rescue with King Saul the Hero. Opponent blocks with Leviathan. I play Coat of Many Colors and then a side battle card. Can my opponent be forced to fight with an Evil King Saul in the side battle?

that's a good question because it comes down to the definition of the battle phase whether it is the phase or the battle where the unique character cannot appear twice

historically, i would say yes haha i think it's cool that you could see good king saul enter battle then evil king saul enter battle (since it is a different battle) in the same phase

"No player may control duplicates of a unique character or cause them to fight each other. This
includes unique characters in play, in battle, in a side battle, face down, or in a set-aside area.
Unique character cards with the same card title and the same art or with the same title and the
same brigade are considered duplicates for deck building purposes; a player may have only
control one of these at any time." so this says that a player which means yes your opponents evil king saul could enter battle in a different battle then ambush the city even more specifically says set them aside which means that good king saul is out of play anyway.

all of this points to yes imo i think that there would be more of an argument if it was just a side battle because then it comes down to the definition of whether it is the phase/field of battle/ or the battle itself but it also says by one player so..

I think you nailed it JD. I couldn't find the quoted text when I looked for it. I see now that it's in the REG under Duplicate Cards. Thanks!

More to the point, the only thing it says in there about having unique characters on opposing sides of the battle, is that they can't be made to fight each other, not that they can't fight on opposing sides in the same battle or battle phase so they can't be present in the same battle at the same time.

But here's the point that stops this. Under Band (emphasis mine):

Quote
Special Conditions
A unique character can only enter the field of battle once per turn. A unique character in a battle is protected
from entering another battle via a band ability while it remains in battle. A unique character in a battle that
leaves the battle is protected from entering any battle via a band ability until the end of the turn.

I'm not sure if this only applies to when a band ability is used or if this rule transcends into our argument. If it does apply here, it would mean that once the good copy of a unique character has entered the FoB, his/her evil counterpart cannot be used in a battle that turn regardless of whether it is the same battle or not.
Just one more thing...

You are correct; the current rule says "once per turn" and not "once per phase," so regardless of how many battles are created, only one copy of a unique character can enter any battle on a single turn.

so this says that a player which means yes your opponents evil king saul could enter battle in a different battle then ambush the city even more specifically says set them aside which means that good king saul is out of play anyway.

In or out of play does not have anything to do with "control," though, just in case anyone tries to say that they can use a different copy of a unique character because it leaves play.

But who controls it is moot; no matter who controls which copies of a unique character, only one such copy can enter a single battle in any complete turn.

In the original example, the opponent's King Saul is protected by game rule from entering battle again.

A clarification should be added to the "Duplicate Cards" entry, though the wording from Banding (in place for quite awhile) is clear on the unique-battle rules.
