Decreased to */0 or Less but Protected from Discard

If a character in territory is decreased to */0 or less but protected from discard (Pharaoh's Throne Room, High Priest's Palace, Headquarters at Riblah, etc.) what happens when the decreased character enters battle?

Once they enter battle the territory those forts wouldn't apply anymore (Since they specific while in territory) so the characters would be discarded if the decrease is still in effect when they do.

Understood, but that wasn't really the question.

Do the SAs activate?  Can someone like Babylonian Soldiers who can increase himself save himself?

There's not a specific set of ECs in mind, more looking at Faith of Noah vs. the protect forts and how to use your own ECs afterwards.

yes, characters protected from discard are not discarded when decreased to /0.

characters abilities first activate when they enter battle, so yes, bab soldiers could potentially increase themselves to stay in play and above /0 before being discarded.

Also I believe even if the EC can't increase itself it would still get SI in addition to its ability going off.

No SI, because it's a game rule discarding it, not an SA.  That might depend on the type of decrease (instant completed in a previous phase vs. ongoing) but I don't think so.

Verifying that the character would be discarded, but the discard cannot insert between other abilities.  So the character entering battle, and all abilities that are involved, complete prior to the 'check' for discard by game rule.

You would, by the definition of SI, have SI in that case still:
Quote from: REG 3.1.0 > Glossary > Special Initiative
When a player is controlling character(s) in battle and an opponent's special ability, or a game rule that has been triggered by an opponent's special ability, would leave that player with no character in battle when the special ability has completed, they have Special Initiative.

However as Aggie pointed out, there are different types of decrease.  An instant decrease (such as on Gates of Samaria) completes when the ability resolves; if that was in a prior phase, the ability cannot be interrupted (per game rule).  If it were an ongoing decrease (like Crown of Thorns), however, that is 'active' and did not 'complete' in a prior phase, so if the ability causing discard by decrease is an opponent's card with an ongoing decrease, you would have SI to interrupt or negate it.

Yeah, went back to re-read the definition of SI and realized the ongoing probably did cause SI.

If there's an instant decrease (like Gates of Samaria) that takes the character to */0 or less, but also an ongoing decrease (like Crown of Thorns) decreasing them further when they next enter battle, is that SI or not?  I'm thinking no, because the ongoing decrease isn't causing the discard.

An EC dying to Crown of Thorns during battle phase could negate it with SI if that's what you're asking.
I am not talking about T2 unless I am explicitly talking about T2. Also Mayhem is fine now somehow!

No what he's asking is this: If you have an EC with */5 in territory being protected from discard who is targeted by Gates of Samaria to reduce him to */0. He then enters battle while the opponent has Crown of Thorns active would CoT grant the EC SI with its decrease or would it be ruled that the discard is happening because of the instant decrease from GoS that happened in a previous phase?
Just one more thing...

It would seem he is being discarded from two different sources, and if the priority change goes through the player whose turn it is would decide which happens first (in which case he would choose Crown then GoS, allowing no SI).
