When starting a battle challenge, I believe my hero's SA activates regardless of whether the challenge is accepted, correct?I can use a set-aside enhancement (such as Sleep) to set aside my hero/EC from battle, thus preventing it from being damaged, correct?

On the second one, you have to play the set aside enhancement when you have initiative, like any other enhancement.
