Several Questions

Hey folks:

I have some more questions. Some of them pertain to rulings, and some are more random questions. Here goes:

1a) Last night, my friend and I were playing some games. He made a rescue attemption with Jephthah, who has the special ability: "Once per game, holder may discard any two Evil Characters in a territory or set-aside area if holder discards the top card from Holder's draw pile." I had an all-demon defense, and the Lost Soul which states: "If a lone Hero begins a rescue attempt against you, you may discard one of your demons in your territory to shuffle this card back into owner's draw pile."

Now, I only had two demons in play, and I was going to sacrifice one to use the Lost Soul's ability. However, he put Jephthah into battle and used his ability to kill my two demons before I could use the Lost Soul. So my question is this: Whose ability activates first, Jephthah's or the Lost Soul's?

1b) Follow-up question: It seems to me that my opponent will always attack with a lone hero because the lone hero has to enter battle first before his banding special ability will activate. The wording on the card says "if a lone hero *begins* a rescue attempt against you..." So my question would be does the banding occur as the Hero begins a rescue attempt, or would I be able to use the Lost Soul before my opponent bands?

2) Which cards discard immediately after their special ability is used, and which ones don't? For instance, my opponent played Colliseum Lions against me, which states "discard one Hero in battle." Does this card discard immediately or is it left on the table in battle, even though it offers no numbers to add to the battle? And again, which cards would discard immediately in battle?

3) A site has to be unoccupied for access, correct? Also, since The Ends of the Earth has the Special Ability to grant access to a site, can it be used to grant access even when occupied?

4) I have Angel of the Lord and Son of God cards in Greek. Are there any other foreign language cards in Redemption?

Thanks!

1a) Jepthah's ability activates first.  if there is a demon left, then you can activate the LS's ability.  Part of beginning the rescue attempt is the activation of the Heroes SA.  Until that is complete, nothing else can happen.

1b) FollI see where you are coming from, but this is why the Heroes SA has too complete. Banding is part of an SA and therefore, that SA activates brining in a nother character before the LS SA can kick off.

2) Only cards that say "discard after use are discarded"  As far as I know any card that has a discard SA (meaning they discard a character, not the card itself) activated immidiatly.  However, if the act of being discarded by Coliseum lions gives the hero initiative, they have the oportunity to play a negate or interrupt to counter that battle winning ability.

3) Yes sites(even Ends of the Earth) have to be unocupied to grant access.  You can put Lost souls in multicolored sites, but you cannot use them for access when you do until the lost soul is rescued or removed fromt he site.

4) No not yet.  Unholy writ has greek letterrs on it in the card art but it is really english words translitterated into greek and not the actual greek words.

Regarding Ends of the Earth, the REG says this:

New Jerusalem (Site Card), Dragon Raid, and Promised Land are mainly used offensively as “access sites” and therefore their special abilities are written to take effect when they enter battle and at no other time.

The REG may need to be updated to include Ends of the Earth, but the rule is the same. You must place it in battle in order to grant access to sites. That is the reason for the second sentence in the SA.

Hey,

Crustpope's answers are correct.

A little more explanation on this one.  "If a lone hero begins a rescue attempt..." means "At the beginning of a rescue attempt, if a lone hero is in battle..."  Character abilities have to complete before other abilities (triggered abilities like the one on the lost soul in question) can kick in.   So when a banding character attacks, it's ability completes before the lost soul can be used, after which there is not a lone hero in battle so the condition on the lost soul is no longer satisfied.

The next major release of the REG is going to avoid the list of cards as done in the entry above to avoid having to update the references every time a new card comes out that fits the reference. We would like to have general conditions explained and perhaps one card used as an example. The general conditions will always hold - it is up to the player to apply it correctly.

But won't that remove the consistency that the REG creates.  If there are not lists of cards that fit specific abilities, then players and hosts will argue about whether a specific card fits in that category of ability.  And without having a set list in the REG how will it be determined who is right?

Hey,

There will still be lists of cards in the new REG, they will just be done differently than they are now.

I see both sides here. Perhaps a simple example ("Such as Dragon Raid") would suffice, rather than an exhaustive list.

Then I suppose I'll wait to see the new REG and just hope that however it is built will lead to consistency of gameplay across the board :)

I think what Mike is saying is that they will give an example of a multi color site ( ex. Dragon raid) and say what it can and cannot do in various circumstances and then let it go at that in stead of listing every multi-colored site that fits this criteria because a list like that makes t he REG out of date as soon as a new multicolored site is released.  But in reality, everyone can tell what a multi-olored site is just by looking at it because it has more than one color on it.

The main consideration is the difference in wording, though, so you would have to choose examples carefully. For the situation described, the question was about the wording of Ends of the Earth's SA that talks about site access specifically. This makes it more akin to New Jerusalem and Promised Land. Dragon Raid's SA does not talk about site access, so the question may still arise because people will wonder if the specific wording of EotE causes an exception.

I agree with the Prof that we need lists in Redemption because there are just too many exceptions. However, as Tim stated, that may be taken care of in different ways in the new REG so everyone will be happy.  ;D

This says it much clearer than I did. I didn't mean to imply the glossary lists would disappear - they will stay. It's the "REG" description section that will be winnowed of card lists. At best it will only use one card where an example is needed.
